+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | ATLANTIS CRUISE SYNOPSIS | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Voyage - Leg: AT 07-15/16 Voyage Dates: 22 Jun - 15 Jul 2002 Chief Sci(s): Stevens/Shirley/Keller/Guilderson Address: Bradley Stevens Kodiak Fisheries Research Center 301 Research Ct. Kodiak, AK 99615 Randall Keller College of Oceanic & Atmos. Sci. OSU Corvallis, OR 97331 Phone: 907-481-1726, 541-737-2354 Email: bradley.g.stevens@noaa.gov, rkeller@coas.oregonstate.edu Cruise Objective: Sampling on Gulf of Alaska seamounts Science Activities: 15 ALVIN dives Observe and collect golden (Lithodes aequispina) and scarlet king crabs (L. couesi); look for juvenile crabs and determine their habitat; document intra-species interactions; document any mating behavior observed; deep dives will be made to observe/collect spider crabs, Macroregonia macrocheira. Dives will be conducted in focused depth ranges of 200-400 m, 400-500 m, 500-750, 750-1000, and 2000-2500. Recover deep-sea stony corals and gorgonins during Alvin dives. In addition, several push cores at each major site. Complete SeaBeam coverage of seamounts listed on synopsis. Dives consisting of depth transects to collect volcanic rocks. Possible dredging for rocks if weather prevents diving and everything nearby has been SeaBeamed, etc. Collect uncontaminated rocks for microbial studies. Gravity cores (night-ops) from two of the main dive sites: Murray-Patton and Campbell, chosen in conjunction w/ Seabeam and 3.5khz / PDR or CHIRP. Water and plankton samples: A water sample from 5m water depth every 0.5 deg latitude on outbound leg 1 and onto Marchand. A rosette cast @ Patton-Murray and also at Campbell. Plankton/POC samples from surface waters in conjunction w/ water sampling. Large gorgonins up to 1.5meters in length and ~25cm in diameter at base (tree-branch geometry). Suggestions welcome as to best method of acquisition. Std manipulator to recover "hand specimen" sized stony corals Program-Provided Science party will build special adaptation for Science Tools: right manipulator claw for capturing crabs (weight < 1 lb). They will bring special basket for holding crabs on Alvin's science tray (weight about 2 lbs). Uncovered boxes or milk crates for rock storage in the Alvin basket. Biobox, supplied by OSU. This is an acrylic box 1' x 1' x 1.5', with a spring-loaded lid, that will rest in Alvin's basket. Was used previously at 9N on Cary cruise (Oct.'01).
