-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [Fwd: [Fwd: University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science (UMCES) Cruise Reports and CTD data]] Date: Mon, 05 Apr 2010 11:07:47 -0400 From: Scott.Mowery To: Jonathan Blythe References: <4BB9ED57.8030704@noaa.gov> Jonathan - I just looked at the metadata web-links you referred to - the links to the BITMAX website are under the header "Metadata_Extensions: Online_Linkage:" I think their intent is to direct users back to the BITMAX-II website for any questions regarding extended elements within the metadata record needed by the BITMAX-II metadata producers (if any). Understand concern re long-term posterity of the web-links, but this is a standard FGDC metadata reference information section 7.11 - I think we have to accept that links are perishable, and either choose to remove references in the archived metadata or leave it in the record with a standard caveat that web-links do not share the record's immortality - my vote is for leaving them! As for the link to the plots - you'll notice this is under the "Browse_Graphic: Browse_Graphic_File_Name:" for a "salinity, dissolved oxygen, OBS turbidity, and fluorescence results from first axial survey from R/V SHARP CTD." I've attached a copy of the associated graphics to this email, and suggest add the files to the archive and mod the metadata as follows: Change: "Browse_Graphic_File_Name: https://mermaid.ncddc.noaa.gov/edu/umces/BITMAXII/BM0701/Cruise_Report/BM0701_Cruise_Report/idinfo/browse/BM0701_Ax01.pdf" To: "Browse_Graphic_File_Name: BM0701_Ax01.pdf" (or similar, wherever the PDF file is located in the accession's directory structure.) Same for the link to the AX02 pdf... Your thoughts on this issue? ----------------------------- As for the .js and .ccs files - these are externally embedded java script files (and associated cascading list files) -- I'm not sure why they're included - I'll get back to you shortly! Did you write the metadata files (html and > xml)? Why do they have links to the internet? One link is to an NCDDC > site, and it brings up plots of data.
