+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | ATLANTIS CRUISE SYNOPSIS | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Voyage - Leg: AT 15-17 Voyage Dates: 24 March - 27 April, 2007 Chief Sci(s): Emily Klein (Klein/White/Fornari) Address: Duke University 103 Old Chemistry Bldg. Division of Earth & Ocean Sciences Durham , NC 27708-0227 Phone: 919-684-5965 Email: ek4@duke.edu Cruise Objective: The overall goal of this study is to characterize the distribution of volcanic eruption sites, the composition of the lavas, and the distribution and composition of hydrothermal systems in the vicinity of the 9 03'N overlapping spreading center on the East Pacific Rise. The study will consist of a nested survey. The DSL-120A sonar, with 4 MAPRs on the tow wire or suspended below the depressor weight, and SM2000 multibeam, CTD, and fluxgate magnetometer attached to the vehicle, will be used to characterize the spatial distribution and eruptive style of lava flow fields and lava distribution systems, tectonic features, and hydrothermal activity. The Jason II system, incorporating video and still photographic imagery, the SM2000 sonar, and manipulative capabilities for collecting both rock and water samples, will then be deployed within the region of the DSL-120A survey for more detailed mapping and sampling. This study will be followed, during the same leg, by two 2-day cruises (S. White and D. Fornari) conducted further north on the EPR (~9 50'N). DSL-120A and Jason II will be deployed at this northern site for two days each. Existing permanent transponders will be used for navigation. Science Activities: Scientific Activities: Collecting and processing data and samples collected by RV Jason II and DSL120 sonar. Rock, water and biologic sample curation. Rock wax core sampling during instrument down times.
