+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | ATLANTIS CRUISE SYNOPSIS | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Voyage - Leg: AT 15-10 Voyage Dates: 16-21 Sept, 2006 Chief Sci(s): Keir Becker (Becker) Address: University of Miami - RSMAS 4600 Rickenbacker Causeway Miami FL 33149 Phone: 1-305-421-4661 Email: kbecker @rsmas.miami.edu Cruise Objective: Dive operations at any of 7 working ODP/IODP CORK sites in NE Pacific: Science Activities: Top priority: Remedial cementing inside the reentry cones at 1301A and 1301B. Tom Pettigrew of Stress Engineering is currently contracted by co-investigator G. Wheat of U. of Alaska to devise a cementing system and plan. Pettigrew/Wheat will submit that plan to the Alvin group for review this summer. It will likely include a system using weights and syntactic flotation to pre-deploy a 55-gallon drum of pre-mixed cement the morning of a dive, with Alvin to maneuver the system (near neutrally buoyant after release of drop weights) to the wellheads, deploy a hose from the drum into the reentry cone, and release the cement. If necessary, all four dives will be devoted to this objective. Second priority, as time becomes available on any dive to 1301A/1301B: Data downloads using ODI Nautilus connectors at nearby Holes 1026B and 1027C, and potential fluid sampling from 1026B. Note that 1301A, 1301B, 1026B, and 1027C are all within a 3 km radius and can be covered by a single 2-transponder net. Backup/third priority (i.e., if cementing needs less than 4 dives or is abandoned for technical reasons): Data download at 857D, 1024C, and 1025C, and recovery of seafloor instrumentation package ~100 m from 1024C using syntactic flotation. Potential exploration and sampling of vents nearby 857D. Science equipment on vehicle - Underwater-mateable connectors at ~10 lbs, as routinely installed in past Alvin operations (e.g., 2005) Equipment in Sphere - 2 laptops and interface wiring, already gas-tested for prior operations. Shipboard Equipment/Nav: Other Requirements: Equipment Handling - Preparation of cementing system described above, and deployment before dives Notes: USBL and doppler/GPS navigation checked off for potential work at 857D, 1024C, and 1025C without LBL transponders. Not sure whether all three are necessary - whatever works best along with search sonar to locate CORK sites. Acoustic release needed to deploy cementing system.
