Upon completion of the science activities the vessel shall return to San Diego, California, on 30 April 2004. The major scientific objective of this RIDGE integrated study site cruise is to assess factors responsible for biological and chemical community structure at hydrothermal vents. In addition, the character of near-axis faulting will be mapped, observed, and tidal triggering of seismicity will be studied. There are sixteen DSV Alvin dives planned for this cruise and a night program of Ocean Bottom Seismometer (OBS) recoveries and deployments. The operations area will be the East Pacific Rise in the vicinity of Latitude 9 degrees 49-51 minutes North & Longitude 104 degrees - 18 minutes West.
