ALVIN sampling at/near chemosynthetic ecosystems along slope base 2. Deployment/recovery of elevators at select ALVIN stations 3. Deploy only palletized experimental packages (6) enroute (WHOI to FL and FL to TX) 4. Time allowing, box coring and deep trawling at night 5. Fl. Escp - This is the primary Hecker/Paul area. It has mussels, tubeworms and clams in easily explored position at base of escarpment. It has a 3-year-old sulfide pail. It is SE most and deepest community. It is also convenient for course purposes. Elbo 711 - Located northward along Escarpment, has seepage geology. Offers some challenge to Paul seep story rather than just exploring the Escarpment base. Convenient for course purposes. Atwater Valley 425 - Two previous dives here found mussel beds but not seep. Sassen is of opinion that more will be found with additional exploration. There are known gas hydrates in the region. Convenient for course purposes. Slick Area B - A lower slope area of persistent slicks in Ian MacDonald's studies. Serves as deeper comparison site for the many upper-slope Green Canyon Sites. The German R/V Sonne may be operating in the area. Atwater Valley 14 - This 1300m site is being considered for joint industry/academic study. Depending upon conditions prevalent during previous days, it could be substituted for Atwater Valley 425. Walker Ridge 371 - A methane/brine rich region based on Sassen coring. Geochemically novel. Short steam from previous. Bryant Canyon - This canyon is structurally similar to Alaminos Canyon. Previously, it lay in US/Mex disputed water. The EEZ boundary has now been finalized and the canyon falls in US water. Alaminos Canyon - Partially explored site w/ good tubeworm/mussel development. Three-year-old Carney sulfide pail. Two dives in this region are anticipated. SSSG Tech: sssg@atlantis.whoi.edu Departure Port: Woods Hole, MA Agent: c/o WHOI 266 Woods Hole Rd. Woods Hole, MA 02543 Contact: John Dyke tel.
