+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | ATLANTIS CRUISE SYNOPSIS | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Voyage - Leg: AT 07-36 Voyage Dates: 21 Jun - 8 Jul 2003 Chief Sci(s): Rob Reves-Sohn (Reves-Sohn/Humphris/Rona) Address: WHOI MS# 24 Woods Hole, MA 02543 Phone: 508-289-3616 Email: rsohn@whoi.edu Cruise Objective: SEABEAM Survey south of Bermuda, then transit to "TAG" Deployment of seismic and thermal monitoring equipment on and around TAG hydrothermal mound; retrieval of fluid and biological samples from TAG vents Science Activities: We will deploy temperature sensors on the TAG mound and in vents using the Alvin manipulators, and we will similarly acquire vent fluids and biological samples from the mound. We will also want to make a microbathymetric map of the mound and will want to take photographs of the equipment installations for reference purposes. OBS (Ocean Bottom Seismometer) to be deployed both free fall and on CTD or hydro wire. Additional dive for Peter Rona to investigate Paleodictyon benthic organism. Operations Area: Bermuda Seabeam survey at 32-17N 64-43W, then 6 Alvin dives Mid-Atlantic Ridge 26-08.2N 44-49.5W at TAG Hydrothermal Vent Field ~4000 meters depth 1 Alvin dive at TAG Hydrothermal Field 26-08.83N 44-48.29W 3401 meters depth SSSG Tech: sssg@atlantis.whoi.edu Departure Port: St. Georges, Bermuda Agent: Master R/V Ship Name Attn: Scientist's Name c/o Meyer Shipping Somers Wharf 14 Water St. St. Georges, GE BX BERMUDA Contact: Capt. (no water samples required) Refrigerator Chest freezer -70 freezer Pinger for wire use WHOI-Provided Science Alvin tide gauge (arriving in OBS van) Tools: Alvin slurp pumps (to use w/Shank "Enzymatic" sampler) Imagenex (for mound survey) Alvin Hi-Lo temp probes ICL's Major pairs sampling bottles For Peter Rona dive: 14 push core assemblies, needs to retain core liners for later analysis Pelagic pump with hose connected to outlet to gently "wash away" surface sediments Possible manipulator movable light to side illuminate organisms for closeup digital photography out side viewport. Program-Provided Fornari down looking still camera Science Tools: 20 ft. OBS lab van, power needed, 480 volts, 30 amps Tim Shank Shrimp Enzymatic Sampler to be on Alvin basket Rona to provide small boundry marker for organism excavation sites (metal ring?) Shipboard Seabeam Equipment/Nav: Transponder nav - 3-4 xponders, 1 net Ship's DP needed to navigate in OBS deployments Other Requirements: Night work anticipated, CTD's, 12 OBS deployments, Seabeam surveys Ship to provide xbt probes for sound velocity profiles CTD w/ relay transponder Sci party instructed to use LBL at night for OBS positioning Notes: Cond. hydro wire - pinger/acoustic release in ~4000m max depth for OBS deployment: Alvin data to be collected, Imagenex data, video & digital images in hull & external also temp probe data. There is an old ODP cone on TAG mound at 26*08.215'N 44*49.565'W Fornari camera sled will not be deployed as previously thought.
