California Blvd. Pasadena, CA 91125 Phone: 626 395 8550 Email: jess@gps.caltech.edu Cruise Objective: Collaborative research: ocean ventilation rates and rapid climate change recorded by deep-sea corals, an Alvin and ABE program to the New England Seamounts. Focus on coral collection methods and habitat characterization with a biology component. Science Activities: 15 ALVIN dives for deep-sea coral collection ABE bathy and photo studies Seabeam Magnetics Hydrocasts Biological experiment deployment Surface towed magnetometer Navo Bell BGM3 gravimeter for surface measurements CTDs and Boyle water sampler on CTD wire Dive & Discover web site Mullineaux current meter deployments Operations Area: NA6, NE Seamounts, Manning (38-15N 60-40W), Gregg (39-00N 61-00W), Gosnold(38-10N 62-20W) and Muir (33-40N & 62-30W) 800-3500 meters SSSG Tech: sssg@atlantis.whoi.edu Departure Port: St. Georges, Bermuda Agent: Meyer Agencies Ltd. 35 Church St PO Box HM 510 Hamilton HM CX BERMUDA Contact: Capt. We will be collecting samples for paleo-radiocarbon studies and C-14 tracer represents a severe contamination hazard. Notes: ABE - ten deployments planned with 3 @ 24 hrs each. ABE to be used as an exploratory tool for Alvin dives and to characterize where corals are/are not found. Currents - Gulf Stream and Western Boundary currents will be a factor. ABE & Alvin require 5 nm separation.
