27 September 2002 Captain Lawrence Bearse Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution R/V Oceanus, Voyage #382 Woods Hole, MA 02543 Dear Captain Bearse: On or about 1 October 2002, your vessel being ready for sea and weather permitting, you will depart Woods Hole, Massachusetts, on Voyage #382. Upon completion of the science activities the vessel shall return to Woods Hole on 14 October 2002. The scientific objective is to conduct diel sampling of near surface waters to assess both species diversity and the distribution of growth rates among eukaryotic phytoplankton. Science activities planned include CTD casts, Hydro casts, on-deck incubations and drogue deployments. The Moffett “Clean Van” and the WHOI Isotope Van will be utilized and authorization for Isotope research work at sea has been approved. The operations area will be the continental shelf and out into the Sargasso Sea. Scientific marine research within the exclusive economic zone of any foreign nation is strictly prohibited.
