+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | ATLANTIS CRUISE SYNOPSIS | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Voyage - Leg: AT 07-13 Voyage Dates: 24 May - 04 Jun 2002 Chief Sci(s): Hammond/Embley/Fornari/Shank Address: Steven Hammond NOAA/PMEL/MRRD Hatfield Marine Science Center 2115 SE OSU Dr. Newport, OR 97365-5258 Bob Embley NOAA/PMEL/MRRD Hatfield Marine Science Center 2115 SE OSU Dr. Newport, OR 97365-5258 Dan Fornari WHOI MS , Redfield 1-16 Woods Hole, MA 02543 Tim Shank WHOI MS 34, Redfield 1-16 Woods Hole, MA 02543 Phone: 541-867-0183, 541-867-0275, 508-289-2857, 508-289-3392 Email: hammond@pmel.noaa.gov, embley@pmel.noaa.gov, dfornari@whoi.edu, tshank@whoi.edu Cruise Objective: The major objectives of the Gal*pagos Rift Alvin dives are to: 1. Assess the temporal and spatial changes that have occurred among and within Gal*pagos faunal assemblages through a detailed mapping and sampling program. 2. Correlate observed variations in faunal and microbial assemblage composition with observed variations in fluid chemistry, sulfide mineralogy and chemistry, pH, and temperature (i.e., nutrition-related properties of the fluids) via extensive biological sampling and in-situ and laboratory analysis of fluid chemistry and sulfides. 3. Explore the Gal*pagos Rift for previously undetected high-temperature venting and new vent fields/animal communities using ABE, towed camera systems and CTD tow-yos. Any new discovery will be mapped and sampling using Alvin and ABE. 4. Develop a comprehensive model of vent community succession at the Galapagos Rift sites . Our goal is that the model we develop can be used to guide the design of future studies and manipulative experiments. Science Activities: 9 ALVIN dives ABE, CTD, camera tows, dredging, coring Operations Area: Galapagos Rift 0-40'N to 0-55'N, 86W to 89.5W 1800m to 3000m SSSG Tech: sssg@atlantis.whoi.edu Departure Port: Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Isl.,Galapagos Agent: Vasile Tudoran Transport 835 Ohio Ave. Long Beach, CA 90804 Contact: Vasile Tudoran 562-882-5590 VTudoran@aol.com Arrival Port: Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Isl.,Galapagos Agent: Vasile Tudoran Transport 835 Ohio Ave. Long Beach, CA 90804 Contact: Vasile Tudoran 562-882-5590 VTudoran@aol.com Installed Scientific 3.5 & 12 kHz Equipment: PDR ADCP XBT De-ion water CTD rosette w/ 10 liter Niskins Fume hood Refrigerator Chest freezers -70 freezer IMET Wire pinger SeaBeam WHOI-Provided Science CTD/rosette system for night plume surveying Tools: Towed camera sled ABE Imagenex Data overlays on video Internal high res camera Seabird pressure tide gauge (extra C batteries) ICL temp probes ALVIN major fluid sampler w/ ICL's Slurp system w/ 2 containers & 2 pumps Data logging 1 second sensor data & interpolated navigation ALVIN magnetometer 8 transponders 2 relay transponders Gravity corer Rock dredge Program-Provided Manifold sampler Science Tools: Seyfried chemical sensor- mounted w/ hydraulics on stbd arm Lilley gas-tight bottles with ICL's BioBoxes (built & on board) Rock storage boxes External digital camera OSU stereo camera Enzymatic sampler, 3rd party tool) Rack of small Niskins Push cores Sampling nets Shipboard Need night time nav (we can have science help, but Equipment/Nav: we'll need to use the ACNAV and record data to disk, ideally as x/y fixes and converted to lat/lon. 2 relay xponders, for CTD and camera Other Requirements: Dark room Isotope van used for lab space, no isotopes ABE van Need Zodiac on 01 deck for camera sled stowage on main deck.
