------------------------------------------------- Information on XBT raw data observed at R/V MIRAI (Cruise number : MR99-K04) ------------------------------------------------- 1. Preface ---------- Using XBT (eXpendable Bathy Thermograph) system, the vertical distribution of water temperature is observed during free fall of its probe part in the seawater. On board, the analogue signal is converted to the temperature by data processor and the data is stored in PC. Depth data is calculated from the elapsed time. 2. System --------- (1) Launcher Hand launcher Manufacturer : Sippican,Inc. Type : LM-3A Operation area : Rear upper deck Automatic launcher Manufacturer : Tsurumi Seiki Co., LTD Type : AL-8 Location : Port side of rear The control panel is installed in the investigation room. (2) Converter Manufacturer : Tsurumi Seiki Co., LTD. Type : MK-30N Location : Investigation room Sampling rate : 50 msec (3) XBT probe specifications ------------------------------------------- Type of probe TSK DeepBlue ------------------------------------------- Range [deg-C] -2 to 35 Accuracy [deg-C] +/- 0.2 Maximum depth [m] 760 Maximum elapsed time [sec] 123 Rated ship speed [knot] 20 Coefficient-a 6.691 Coefficient-b -2.25 ------------------------------------------- 'Coefficient-a' and 'Coefficient-b' presented in the above table are used in the following equation, which is used for the depth calculation. Z = at + 10E-3 * bt^2 Where Z(m) is the depth and t(sec) is the elapsed time. 3. Note ------- (1) File format information XBT data of all deployments of this cruise are reprocessed by converter, MK-130 manufactured by Tsurumi Seiki Co., LTD. And as for the column of 68-70 presented in the format description should be replaced by the following; ------------------------------------------------- Column Description Format Unit Remarks ------------------------------------------------- 68-70 Depth step i1,a2 - Fixed as '1m ' ------------------------------------------------- (2) Position error infomation There is no position data for the following file on this cruise. 199908061154.xbt
