+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | OCEANUS CRUISE SYNOPSIS | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Voyage - Leg: OC 428 Voyage Dates: 30 Aug - 05 Sept, 2006 Chief Sci(s): George Frisk (Lynch) Address: Florida Atlantic University Dept. of Ocean Engineering: Seatech Campus 101 N. Beach Rd. Dania Bearch, FL 33004-3023 2nd POC - Cindy Sellers, WHOI, x2425 (in addition to Chief Sci) Phone: 954-924-7245 Email: gfrisk@seatech.fau.edu Cruise Objective: SW06 cruise Science Activities: 1. Deploy and recover small mooring (1 ea) 2. Deploy 4 drifting buoys, suspend J-15 source from A-Frame and drift for 12-18 hours, recover 4 drifting buoys. 3. Drifting buoy activity will be repeated 4 times during cruise as time allows. 4. CTD casts - possibly at the same time as J-15 source off the A-Frame (JD 8/16) 5. Chirp sonar during drifting and/or along buoy tracks. Operations Area: New Jersey Shelf ~39N, 73W 60-90 m 5 days on station, ~18 hours to first station SSSG Tech: sssg @oceanus.whoi.edu Departure Port: Woods Hole, MA Agent: Master R/V Oceanus Attn: Scientist's Name c/o WHOI 266 Woods Hole Rd. (JD 8/16) We will be deploying a moored VLA (60 m long) and four drifting buoys, each w/hydrophones at 40 m and 43 m depth. The J15-3 source (suspended at 40 m depth from the A-frame of the drifting Oceanus) for periods of 12-18 hrs. We hope to do this type of experiment 4 times during the period Aug. 30 - Sept. 5. (JD 8/24) If steaming with J-15 source deployed speed is anticipated to be at 3-4 knots. (JD 8/24) May deploy ship's CTD along with J-15 on A-Frame at the same time - anticipated increase in number of casts (~100) no water collected. (JD 8/24) Will set up some laptops in the upper lab, existing science computers do not need to be removed. (JD 8/24) Drifting Buoys are hand deployed and recovered with a tugger Navy Clearance Status: Last Modified: 12/13/2006 Check List: Required?
