+--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | ATLANTIS CRUISE SYNOPSIS | +--------------------------------------------------------------------------+ Voyage - Leg: AT 11-24 Voyage Dates: 12 Mar - 06 Apr 2005 Chief Sci(s): Bob Vrijenhoek (Vrijenhoek/Van Dover) Address: Bob Vrijenhoek MBARI 7700 Sandholdt Rd. Moss Landing, CA 95039 Cindy Van Dover The College of William & Mary Biology Department Millington Hall Williamsburg VA 23187 757-221-2229 Phone: 831-775-1799 Email: vrijen@mbari.org, clvand@wm.edu Cruise Objective: Primary objectives of the proposed research are to explore a poorly known global region that might provide historical or present-day connections between major biogeographical provinces in the deep-sea. Biological specimens will be collected with Alvin and preserved on board Atlantis for molecular and morphological studies that will be conducted at home-based laboratories. Population genetic analyses will focus on assessing genetic diversity and geographical structure, and on estimating modes of dispersal and rates of gene flow within species. Continuing systematic studies will focus on development of robust multi-gene phylogenies for the animal and associated microbes that dominate vents. Van Dover - quantitative sampling of mussel beds, description of vent system Science Activities: Operations include: Alvin dives; use of ALVIN Niskin water bottles, suction sampler; collection of macro-invertebrates, deployment and recovery of crab traps, tube cores. Van Dover - I have an old digital camera that gas tested some time ago (WHOI test label is still on the camera). I may ask to take this in the sub, but expect that new Alvin-supplied equipment will be more useful. Shipboard Transponder Nav - 2 nets, 2 xpndrs each Equipment/Nav: USBL Navigation Other Requirements: Laboratory gear has been stowed in Atlantis prior to departure from San Diego in January 2005 Critical specimens and associated chemicals will be removed when we depart the ship at Easter island. We are bringing our own dry-ice maker and CO2 cylinders. We request leaving the bulk of scientific samples aboard the ship to be off-loaded when Atlantis returns to the first N. American port. These will include materials stored in the -70 C freezers, materials preserved in 70% ethanol, and materials stored in 10% formalin solution. Will need 6 cu ft of -70 freezer, samples may come off in Manzanillo Van Dover - I will only be using formalin and alcohol. I do not anticipate having any chemicals left at the end of the cruise, but if I do, I would like to offer them to the next group of biologists, should they need these standard chemicals. Van Dover - Since we do not know entirely what we will find at this relatively unexplored vent field, it is difficult to say whether I will in fact use a slurp pump, but it would be good to have them available just in case. Van Dover - I am not sure about the imagenx; I believe there will be a German geologist or 2 on board and I would be eager to collaborate with him on developing a high resolution map of the site if we have time and capabilities. Van Dover - I am also not sure about sea-beaming. When do you need an answer on this? Again, our German colleagues may well be able to use the ship at night for this. Perhaps Bob Vrijenhoek has dealt with this in his Cruise Planning Document. Notes: Van Dover - I have found that a sink set-up in the ROV hangar on Atlantis is convenient for processing our samples. The bosun generally sets this up for us (Atlantis has carried an aluminum sink) and we supply a filter that we hook up to the seawater supply. The bosun also sets us up with sufficient lighting when necessary, so that we can process samples into the night as necessary. This eliminates any issue of clogging the sinks in the lab.
