***************************************************************** Journal for accession number: 0043733 Created on: 2018-08-28 19:15:45 UTC By: Automated Ingest Agent Source: Gap-filled versions of the 5-day data were built by NODC from the 5-day cloud-screened data and were used to create the "Classic" 5-day climatologies (which are archived separately). These gap-filled 5-day data are in HDF4 format. Version: 3.3 Updates received on: 2010-05-01 Actions: Updates were received for this data set. These updates were copied into the data/0-data/ directory of this accession. These updates may provide additional files or replace obsolete files. This version contains the most complete and up-to-date representation of this archival information package. All of the files received prior to this update are available in the preceding version of this accession. An automated process copied the 5-day cloud-screened gap-filled data files into the data/0-data/ directory of this accession. Files: Files in this accession include Pathfinder v5.0 5-day data files, 5-day cloud-screened full-resolution and one-degree data files, and 5-day cloud-screened gap-filled full-resolution data files. about/ This directory contains files created by NCEI staff, including 'negotiable' information between NCEI staff and the data provider. journal.txt - This file. 4km_NODCRSMASAVHRRPathfinderV5_5-dayDatafor2002.txt - Metadata in Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM) format, Vers. 2 (FGDC-STD-001-1998), represented as human-readable text. 4km_NODCRSMASAVHRRPathfinderV5_5-dayDatafor2002.xml - Metadata in Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM) format, Vers. 2 (FGDC-STD-001-1998), represented as XML. 0043733_preview.jpg - A representative browse or preview graphic for this data set. browse_images/ - A directory containing browse or preview images of various data files. data/0-data/ This directory contains Pathfinder v5.0 data files in HDF4 format. Each set of temporally-averaged data uses one of the following conventions: 5day/2002/OBSDATE.[BITCODE][RESO][AVGPERIOD][DAYNIGHT][VERSION]-TYPE(-BITS).hdf where: OBSDATE = The date(s) the observations were made, as SYYYYDDD-EYYYYDDD, with: SYYYYDDD = starting 4-digit year and 3-digit day EYYYYDDD = ending 4-digit year and 3-digit day BITCODE = Indicates the bit length of the pixel values in the file. "s" is for 16 bit files, "m" is for 8 bit files (see BITS below) RESO = Approximate resolution in km. Set to "04" for 4 km files AVGPERIOD = Indicates the averaging period used to create the file, in this case, 5-Day Files = "5". DAYNIGHT = Indicates nighttime (1 or 4) or daytime (2 or 3) observations. Within Pathfinder, all satellite used prior to NOAA-17 are "afternoon" satellites, which means their daytime observations fall around 2 pm in the afternoon. NOAA-17 is a "morning" satellite, meaning its daytime observations are made around 10 am. Thus, two codes are needed for both day and night. This convention is consistent with NASA Aqua (an afternoon satellite) and NASA Terra (a morning satellite), which also use these codes. VERSION = Indicates the version of the Pathfinder algorithm used to create the file. Currently, this can be one of: pfv50 = Formal Pathfinder Version 5.0 pfrt = Interim Pathfinder Version 5.0 (i.e., "Pathfinder Real Time") pfv51 = Formal Pathfinder Version 5.1 pfrtn17 = Interim Pathfinder Version 5.0 from NOAA-17 (these appear only in 2004 interim file names) TYPE = Indicates the type of data stored in the file. TYPE may be one of the following: sst: Pathfinder all-pixel SST bsst: OISST V2 first-guess SST field sdev: Standard deviation num: Number of observations qual: Overall quality value msk1: Quality mask 1 msk2: Quality mask 2 BITS = Number of bits in each pixel. Only present for 16-bit files (-16b). hdf = Indicates HDF-SDS Version 4 file format or 5day_CloudScreened/FullRes/2002/OBSDATE.pfv5sst_5day.hdf where: OBSDATE = The date(s) the observations were made, as SYYYYDDD-EYYYYDDD, with: SYYYYDDD = starting 4-digit year and 3-digit day EYYYYDDD = ending 4-digit year and 3-digit day pfv5sst_5day = Indicates Pathfinder V5 SST 5-day averaging period. hdf = Indicates HDF-SDS Version 4 file format or 5day_CloudScreened/OneDegree/2002/OBSDATE.pfv5sst_5day_onedeg.hdf where: OBSDATE = The date(s) the observations were made, as SYYYYDDD-EYYYYDDD, with: SYYYYDDD = starting 4-digit year and 3-digit day EYYYYDDD = ending 4-digit year and 3-digit day pfv5sst_5day_onedeg = Indicates Pathfinder V5 SST 5-day averaging period, in one-degree bins. hdf = Indicates HDF-SDS Version 4 file format or 5day_CloudScreened_GapFilled/FullRes/2002/YYYY.pfv5sst_pentadNN.hdf where: YYYY = The year during which the observations were made, as 4-digit year. pfv5sst_pentadNN = Indicates Pathfinder V5 SST averaging, for pentad NN, where NN goes from 01 to 73, as a year is broken up into 73 pentads (5-day intervals). hdf = Indicates HDF-SDS Version 4 file format The following is a summary of the differences between the data files in the previous version of this accession and this version: Total number of files: 1241 Number of new files: 73 Number of ***************************************************************** Journal for accession number: 0043733 Created on: 2008-07-29 17:16:51 +0000 By: Sheri Phillips,SSMC3 4701,7133277 127 Source: The 4 km Pathfinder effort at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) and the University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) is an extension of, and improvement on, the sea surface temperature (SST) fields from the NOAA/NASA AVHRR Oceans 9km Pathfinder dataset. In this 4 km Pathfinder project, some important shortcomings in the original 9 km data have been corrected, and the entire time series has been reprocessed at the 4 km Global Area Coverage (GAC) level, the highest resolution possible globally. Twice-daily SST and related parameters from 1985-2001 have been produced, as well as temporal averages for 5-day, 7-day, 8-day, monthly, and yearly periods. Low-resolution .JPEG browse images are available for each dataset. These data products and accompanying Federal Geophysical Data Committee (FGDC) metadata records were produced and archived for distribution at the NOAA National Oceanographic Data Center in 2004. The collection was updated in 2008 to include data for 2002-2006, and again in 2011 to include value-added, cloud-screened products in HDF4. These products contain daytime, nighttime, and day-night averaged data of quality flags 4-7 only, as well as standard deviation and pixel count information. They have been produced from the original Pathfinder Version 5 data by NODC for Daily, 5-day, 7-day, and monthly temporal averages at 4km and one degree spatial resolution, as well as five degree spatial resolution for monthly products.
