Weisberg is maintaining an array of moored instruments on the west Florida shelf for in-situ measurements of currents, temperature, salinity, surface meteorology, and sea level. Our field work also includes participation in monthly hydrographic cruises. In addition to the field work we are running numerical ocean circulation model experiments on the west Florida shelf in collaboration with the biological modeling group headed by Dr. J. Walsh. Purpose: The physical oceanography portion of the ECOHAB Florida Program is directed at describing and understanding the role of the west Florida shelf circulation in the generation, maintenance, and dissipation of red tide blooms. Supplemental Information: ECOHAB (ECology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Blooms) is a scientific program designed to increase understanding of the fundamental processes underlying the impacts and population dynamics of HABs. This program addresses the many factors at organismal, population, community, and ecosystem levels that determine how HAB species respond to, and potentially alter their environment, the manner in which HAB species affect food-web and community interactions. The program is based on the results of a workshop co-sponsored by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and National Science Foundation (NSF) and currently receives funding from several federal partners including NOAA, NSF, the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This drift was also present in the monthly M2 tidal ellipses, which should have had fixed orientations (as was observed for the EC63 mooring over a similar period in 1999). To correct the EC61 velocity measurements for the compass drift, a ""fixed"" compass heading was estimated at 313 degrees. The observed headings were then subtracted from this to obtain a time series of differential headings dh(t) representing the magnitude of the compass drift. The original velocity components, u(t) and v(t), were then rotated by the angle dh(t) to correct for the drift. The time series of corrected velocity components, u'(t) and v'(t), were calculated by the rotation equations: u'(t) = u(t)*cos(dh(t)) - v(t)*sin(dh(t)) v'(t) = u(t)*sin(dh(t)) + v(t)*cos(dh(t)) The M2 tidal ellipses calculated from these corrected velocities displayed a steady orientation in close alignment with those from the EC63 mooring. The time series of the ADCP compass heading for EC62 showed a significant compass drift throughout the deployment period. This drift was also present in the monthly M2 tidal ellipses, which should have had fixed orientations (as was observed for the EC63 mooring). To correct the EC62 velocity measurements for the compass drift, a ""fixed"" compass heading was estimated at 189 degrees. Many profiles of echo amplitude for EC21 displayed a regularly spaced sequence of spikes or peaks with depth. These peaks were attributed to interference of the ADCP acoustic signal by instruments attached to the buoy line. A frequency distribution plot showed the echo amplitude peaks occurring primarily in bins 4, 14, 23, 33, 42, 52, 61, and 71 (corresponding to nominal bin depths of 4.5, 9.5, 14.0, 19.0, 23.5, 28.5, 33.0, and 38.0 meters). The hourly velocity measurements in these bins and two bins above and below were flagged and recalculated by linear interpolation. Many profiles of echo amplitude for EC34 displayed a regularly spaced sequence of spikes or peaks with depth. These peaks were attributed to interference of the ADCP acoustic signal by instruments attached to the buoy line. A frequency distribution plot showed the echo amplitude peaks occurring primarily in bins 3, 5, 10, 16, 21, 27, 32, and 38 (corresponding to nominal bin depths of 4.0, 5.0, 7.5, 10.5, 13.0, 16.0, 18.5, and 21.5 meters). The hourly velocity measurements in these bins and two bins above and below were flagged and recalculated by linear interpolation. Lineage: Methodology: Methodology Type: Field- Mooring deployment Methodology Description: Surface Mooring Deployment - A forklift is used to load all mooring equipment and instruments aboard the research vessel that has been scheduled for use in the deployment of the given mooring. Mooring is built and the instruments are set up and installed before the ship leaves port. The research vessel then steams to the desired mooring location to begin the deployment. The 1 1/2"" chain is faked out on deck so that it will free-fall upon time of deployment. The 7/16"" wire rope with the in line instruments installed is hand deployed over the stern. The 2.7m foam buoy with all surface instruments is then lifted over the stern with the craned, lowered into the water, and quick-released using a rope activated quick release hook. The vessel then kicks ahead stretching the mooring line out beyond the stern. Once tension is on the chain, it is released by a cut line and free falls to the bottom. As the last lay of chain is leaving the deck, the crane lifts the steel plate that the anchor sits on deploying it over the stern. A fly-by of the buoy completes the deployment making sure that all is well. Upon reaching the mooring location for recovery, divers are sent down to cut the wire rope with bolt cutters just above the point that the wire rope is attached to the 1 1/2"" chain. The divers are recovered and the research vessel is positioned next to the buoy for recovery. Tag lines are attached to the buoy and a lifting strap is installed so the crane can lift the buoy aboard. Once the buoy is on board, the winch is attached to the remaining mooring line and it is slowly pulled aboard. Each of the in line instruments is removed from the mooring line as it comes on board. All mooring components and instruments are cleaned with a pressure washer before the vessel returns to port. Sub-surface Mooring Deployment - A forklift is used to load all mooring equipment and instruments aboard the research vessel that has been scheduled for use in the deployment of the given mooring. Mooring is built and the instruments are set up and installed before the ship leaves port. The research vessel then steams to the desired mooring location to begin the deployment. Position and depth are determined, the 45"" foam sphere is connected to the crane using a acoustic release. The entire system: ADCP float, acoustic releases, chain and anchor are lifted over the side and lowered as far as the crane cable allows, the release connecting the mooring the crane is then fired using the proper deck gear and frequencies allowing the mooring to fall to the bottom. A check of the releases is completed after deployment to determine status. Upon reaching the mooring location for recovery, the transducer for the acoustic release deck gear is lowered into the water. Codes are sent to the acoustic releases to wake them up and determine their distance from the ship. Once their location has been determined, codes are sent to release the mooring. After the buoy appears on the surface, the ship is positioned for recovery. Tab lines are attached to the buoy, and the crane is connected. The entire mooring is lifted over the side of the ship. All mooring components and instruments are cleaned with a pressure washer before the vessel returns to port. Bottom Mounted Mooring Deployment - A forklift is used to load all mooring equipment and instruments aboard the research vessel that has been scheduled for use in the deployment of the given mooring. Mooring is built and the instruments are set up and installed before the ship leaves port. The research vessel then steams to the desired mooring location to begin the deployment. A position is picked with proper depth, the 2300 lb. rack (in air weight) is connected to the A-frame and winch cable via a 4-point harness. The rack is lifted and lowered over the stern and dropped to the bottom. Divers then go down and disconnect the harness and check all instruments (making sure that the rack is level and that the pinger/locator is working). A good GPS position is then taken to mark the mooring position. Upon reaching the mooring position, a small boat is lowered into the water with divers. The divers have a hand held pinger locator to get them to the exact position of the mooring. Divers then drop a float to mark the position. The research vessel then lowers the winch cable with a four point harness to the bottom. Divers enter the water, follow the cable to the bottom, and attach the four point harness to the mooring. Divers return to the research vessel and the mooring is winched aboard. The entire mooring is lifted over the side of the ship. All mooring components and instruments are cleaned with a pressure washer before the vessel returns to port.
