This is of great assistance to us in attempting to provide error free data. If you think there are aspects of Trawler that could be improved, we would appreciate your feedback. Your Queries: 10 December 2004 9:40 AM ============ 2. You mentioned in a previous message that data post 2000 is not yet available through Trawler, but it would be shortly. Would shortly be in early 2005? --------- All post 2000 HYD and CTD data that is out of embargo was made publicly accessible via Trawler on the 9 December 2004 We do hold some non National Facility Hydrology data, mostly pre 1985 that we are working on at the moment: Ship (Code) Voyages Stations Derwent Hunter (10) 34 542 Discovery (12) 4 39 Gascoyne (20) 30 1238 Kimbla (81) 19 387 Sprightly (G9) 145 4215 We expect to be able to release all the Sprightly data via Trawler next week. The other data in this list will not be loaded until after March 2005, and we expect to have many QC issues to resolve before the process is complete. ----- ============= Allright, here are my data queries, 1. There is something about "all CTD temperature values in the warehouse" being T-90. Do all CTD temperature values in Trawler are t90, or CTD data from before 1990 are in t68? --------- All temperatures in data extracted from Trawler will be in T90. For CTD data extracted from our old data archive, the temperature scale for the temperature data is always t68 (IPTS-68) for data up to the end of 1989, and t90 (ITS-90) from 01-JAN-1990 onwards. If there is any doubt about your pre 1996 data holdings, the most robust method of correcting any anomalies should be to obtain these data again via Trawler. ----- ========= 2. There are some CTD data mentioned in the MarLIN metadata that do not appear in the cruise selection in Trawler, e.g. FR199108, FR199132, FR199305. Why is this? ----- FR199108 - Tow Yo data (erroneously listed as CTD - record now corrected). FR199132 - ??? FR199305 - Tow Yo data (erroneously listed as CTD - record now corrected). ---- ======== 3. Is there info about what type and model of CTDs were used for each cruise, or group of cruises? --- We used Neil Brown CTD units on Franklin until FR200004 and on FR200007. From Franklin voyage FR200005 on, Seabird units were used, EXCEPT for FR200007. Pamela Brodie has extracted the information held in our database for you (see attached email). This information does not seem to be complete. If you need more, please let us know. ----- ===== 4. Are the stations times and dates in UT? ---- From the Trawler Download format doc at http://www.marine.csiro.au/warehouse/javadoc/Download.pdf For CTD and for Hydrology data: "Times are in UTC for all Franklin voyages and Southern Surveyor voyages after 1996. Times for other voyages are not reliable." I think it would be unusual for RV Franklin times to be local. ---- ====== 14 December 2004 8:18 AM ===================== "............................... In the meantime, I got a dodgy location for station 98 in cruise SO198803. ........................" ---- The SO198803 cast 98 position has been changed by the one degree in both ctd and hydrology datasets. ---- =================== 15/12/2004 7:34 AM =============== " 1. I would sincerely appreciate if you let me know when new CTD data are included at the Data Trawler. I was surprised to get data after 2000. Could it be that the addition of post-2000 data you mentioned has already happened, and there will not be new public data for a while now?" ---- As per ---- ======== 2. All stations of cruise FR200105, except one, have longitudes greater than 180.000. I have converted these to negative (west) longitudes by subtracting 360.000 from them. The resulting locations seem to be correct, but please, let me know if I have wrongly converted the longitudes. Notice that the reported values are beyond the range for longitude in the format description. ---- Our format description is not correct. This document is under review and the corrected version will be published shortly. The reason we use longitudes greater than 180.000 is that some of our software expects all longitudes as degrees East. ----------------- If you have more queries, please let us know. It is a total of 2,282 stations from 48 cruises. By the way, Data Trawler is great. It is very neat to have online access to this type of databases. Here are a few questions related to the new bottle data: 1. Cruise SS199304 appears in the Data Trawler Hydro cruises menu, but the search cannot find the data for this cruise. 2. I got three bottle stations for which their reported locations create an odd cruise track and are significantly different than the location of the associated CTD station. Here is the summary, a) Bottle station 3 in cruise SS199405 has a longitude of 144.471E, while the longitude of CTD station 3 in the same cruise is 145.110E. b) Bottle station 14 in cruise SS199405 has a longitude of 144.596E, while the longitude of CTD station 14 in the same cruise is 145.597E. b) Bottle station 7 in cruise SS199606 has a location of 39.157S:147.380E, while the location of CTD station 7 in the same cruise is 38.715S:148.273E. Could the locations of these three bottle stations be corrected to match the location of their associated CTD stations? I hope you are receiving my messages. Regards Terry -----Original Message----- From: Ricardo Locarnini [mailto:Ricardo.Locarnini@noaa.gov] Sent: Friday, 17 December 2004 2:42 AM To: Byrne, Terry (Marine, Hobart) Cc: Brodie, Pamela (Marine, Hobart) Subject: Answers follow-up Hello Terry, Sincere thanks for the info on my Data Trawler queries. I like the way Data Trawler has been designed. It is easy to use and extremely helpful. Here are a few follow-up questions, 1. Temperature scale: All the temperatures in the new (for us) CTD data I downloaded from Data Trawler this week are in t90. I will sort out later the temperature scale of CTD data we obtained before this week. But, what about the temperatures values in the Hydro files of Data Trawler? I compared temperature values for 1979 Courageous cruises and 1991 Franklin cruises as they appear now in Data Trawler and as we have them in our archives from data submissions obtained in 1992 and 1995. All temperatures are identical, i.e. 1979 Courageous temps in Data Trawler match the values for the same cruise we obtained in 1992, and 1991 Franklin temps in Data Trawler match the values for the same cruise we obtained in 1995. It appears I would make a mistake flagging the hydro Data Trawler temps as t90. It is not crucial if there's no temperature scale flag for each cruise/ship/time period ... But I do not want to assign the wrong flag. --------- Courageous hydro temps are not T90. My understanding is that T90 and T68 were not used by us in conjunction with hydrolgy data, so no flag would be best. Pamela will consider adding temperature scale as a field in the database, but this is not a high priority task for us at the moment. -------- 2. Pressure vs. depth: All ship data in the hydro section of Data Trawler appear to be reported at pressure (db) levels. For early submissions, e.g. the 1979 Courageous data received in 1992, we have the pressure values in decibars reported by Data Trawler archived as depth values in meters: a. Did we do a mistake when archiving the data received in 1992, or b. Are "pressure" values reported for the ship data in Data Trawler a combination of depth (m) and pressure (db) values? {YES} ------------- All Franklin and Southern Surveyor depths used in hydrology data were obtained from the CTD and are in decibar. Almost all earlier voyages used thermometric depth on deep casts, calculated in metres, however if there are corresponding CTD casts, pressure would probably have been used. There is no information about this is stored in the hydrology data archive. Shallow casts to a nominal depth of 50m and 100m were usually based on wire out. Hydrology Data extracted from Trawler has pressure as the headding for station depth regardless of the original data source. -------- 3. MarLIN has an entry, record number 3283, describing CTD data for Franklin Voyage FR 32/91, but there is no entry for such a cruise in the CTD voyages list in Data Trawler. However, the hydro section of Data Trawler has an entry for cruise FR199103-2. A search on this entry gives 13 hydro stations, which matches our bottle archives for this cruise. Can the CTD data for this cruise be recovered? ---- Pamela will load these data. ------------- 4. Could the Tow-yo CTD data for cruises FR199108 and 199305 be also recovered? I understand the CTD data for cruises FR199619 and FR199709 were similarly obtained, and they appear in the Data Trawler. ---------- The data from FR199108 and 199305 are of such dubious quality that we do not believe these data should be added to any archive. No samples were taken during these voyages, and the raw data format is not accesible to our data processing programs. There are no plans to add these data to Trawler. -------------- 5. I went over the CTD description files, and there are a couple of entries that apparently do not match, or I am reading wrong one of the two files: CTD unit information from Warehouse, and Voyages names and corresponding CTD Unit numbers. Here is my summary: CTD 1, Component_ID = 33, EG&G MKIIIB; no problem. CTD 2, Component_ID = 17 (in CTD Unit info) or = 31 (in Voyages names), EG&G MKIIIB or EG&G MKIIIC ? CTD 3, Component_ID = 569 or 30, SBE II plus or EG&G MKIIIB ? CTD 4, Component_ID = 34, EG&G MKIIIB; no problem. CTD 8, Component_ID = 6, EG&G MKIIIC (WOCE); no problem. CTD 9, Component_ID = 44, EG&G MKIIIC (WOCE); no problem. CTD 10, Component_ID = ?? or 17, EG&G MKIIIB, EG&G MKIIIC, or EG&G MKIIIC (WOCE) ? CTD 19, Component_ID = 568, SBE II plus, no problem. CTD 20, Component_ID = 31 or 569, SBE II plus or EG&G MKIIIB ? CTD (Southern Surveyor), Component_ID = ?? or 104, ?? 6. (I did not see answers to the two next questions. If I missed them, my apologies.) Cruise SS199304 appears in the Data Trawler Hydro cruises menu, but the search cannot find the data for this cruise. Can these data be recovered? --------------- Please check the attached files. I apologise for the garbled file sent previously. <> <> -------------- 7. I got three bottle stations for which their reported locations create an odd cruise track and are significantly different than the location of their associated CTD station. ----------- Pamela replied to me (below) after a previous email, and I had not sent this info on to you: a) Bottle station 3 in cruise SS199405 has a longitude of 144.471E, while the longitude of CTD station 3 in the same cruise is 145.110E. b) Bottle station 14 in cruise SS199405 has a longitude of 144.596E, while the longitude of CTD station 14 in the same cruise is 145.597E. The start position for this ctd is -39.01167 146.59683E. b) Bottle station 7 in cruise SS199606 has a location of 39.157S:147.380E, while the location of CTD station 7 in the same cruise is 38.715S:148.273E. Regarding these other Ricardo stations - we do use the ctd time in each case and the records can be updated accordingly. The SS199606 ctd location is corroborated by the underway data. Note (from Terry) the other stations are not exactly confirmed by the underway data, so Pamela will follow up this anomaly before updating the database. ------------------ Best wishes, Ricardo Name: survey_components.csv Type: Microsoft Excel Comma Separated Values File survey_components.csv (application/x-unknown-content-type-Excel.CSV) Encoding: base64 Description: survey_components.csv Download Status: Not downloaded with message Name: ctd_components.csv Type: Microsoft Excel Comma Separated Values File ctd_components.csv (application/x-unknown-content-type-Excel.CSV) Encoding: base64 Description: ctd_components.csv Download Status: Not downloaded with message ---- Subject: RE: Reviewed answers follow-up Date: Tue, 11 Jan 2005 16:09:03 +1100 From: To: CC: , Hi Richardo We have been shut down over the Christmas break, and I have just got back to work. Sincere thanks for your help and the information you forwarded. Here are a few issues that I have left. If no information is available for some of these points, just let me know. 1. I have assigned to numerous cruises the forwarded info on CTD instruments. For other cruises I have no info, but I have made some guesses. Please, let me know if any of these are wrong. I can always assign the generic "CTD unknown flag": a) Two CTD's were apparently utilized in cruise SS199402, Neil Brown's IIIB and IIIC. I have assigned to these data a generic Neil Brown CTD flag, but if you happen to know which stations were taken with each CTD, I will correct the info. b) I have guessed and assigned a Mark IIIB CTD flag to the following cruises: FR199103 FR199106 FR199107 FR199109 FR199201 FR199203 FR199206 FR199207 FR199208 SS199202 c) I have assigned a generic Neil Brown CTD to the following cruises: FR199406 FR199409 FR199507 FR199510 FR199601 FR199605 FR199610 FR199701 FR199702 FR199703 FR199704 FR199705 FR199706 FR199707 FR199709 FR199710 FR199711 FR199801 FR199802 FR199803 FR199807 FR199809 FR199810 FR199814 FR199901 FR199902 FR199907 SS199505 2. Please, let me know when the CTD data for FR199103-2 are loaded in Data Trawler. I will forget about the CTD data for cruises FR199108 and FR199305. There are two other remaining data sets I cannot get through Data Trawler: a. CTD data for FR198801 is described in MarLIN but it does not appear in the menu of CTD cruises. b. Cruise SS199304 appears in the menu of Hydro cruises, but Data Trawler does not find the data when this cruise is selected. 3. I will wait for the confirmation of the location of bottle stations 3 and 14 for SS199405 (Thanks for catching my typo in the longitude of station 14 I quoted in my message). I understand from your message that the location of bottle station 7 for SS199606 can be changed to match the location of CTD station 7, as confirmed by the underway data.
