K.V.L.N.S. Sarma obtained his MSc (Tech) Geophysics degree from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam in 1975. He started his career as Junior Research fellow in High Pressure & Rock Mechanics Lab, NGRI, Hyderabad. He obtained his PhD from Andhra University on the thesis entitled "Physical and Elastic properties of Ophiolitic rocks of Indus suture zone, Dras - Sanko - Kargil of Kashmir, Himalaya.

He joined the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) in Marine Geophysics group and worked in the R & D projects like " Crustal studies of the Bay of Bengal" and Industrial oriented sponsored projects like "Sub bottom profiling in the area earmarked for double Banking operation at Mormugoa Harbour ".

At present to his credit he is having 15 publications and 5 Technical Reports.
