HOMEPAGE OF DR. S.M. KARISIDDAIAH

Dr. S. M. Karisiddaiah graduated (1971) from Mysore University, and got post graduation degree (1973) with first class from Karnatak University. He has been awarded with Ph.D. (1980) from Karnataka University for his thesis entitled,"Geology of the area around Bellary, Karnataka state".

From the date of joining (1977) the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) ,worked in the project "Regional Geographical Studies of the western continent margin of India and the adjoining Arabian Sea." Then, from 1978 onwards also involved in the other priority project "Surveys for Pollymettalic Nodules" and continued till 1987 in this project. Again from 1987 onwards continued in the first project, which has been slightly remodified.

From the year 1981 onwards enrolled as a life member for the Journal Geological Society of India, Banglore, India . And also as a referee for the Indian Journal of Marine Sciences (IJMS),New Delhi, India, since 1988.

Has been deputed to Mauritius (1981) regarding Manganese nodules exploration cruise onboard R.V. Gaveshani and to West Germany(1982) for advanced training in the field of offshore exploration and ocean mining. Recently he has been awarded a six months (Nov, 1994 to April 1995) DST-CEC collaborative(Marie-Curie) Post Doctoral Fellowship to work on Methane emission studies from the oceanic sediments and the water column. This was done at Free University, Berlin, Germany, under the guidence of Prof Dr. Peter Halbach.

During the last few years he has worked on various areas such as Polymetallic nodules, minerological, geochemical and morphological studies of Carlsberg and Central Indian Ocean Basins-Ocean floor sediments grainsize and mineralogical studies of Mauritius beach sands and major element studies of Carlsberg Ridge sediments-Oceanfloor basalts, such as Bombay harbour basalts, Bombay high basalts, Ocean floor basalts, pumice and spilities from Central Indian Ocean basin-Continental margin studies such as geomorphological and shallow seismic structural studies of western continental shelf of India, gas-charged sediments on the inner shelf and their implications.

Presently working on the gas-charged sediments , seeps, pockmarks and also on gas hydrates along the western margin and further deep seas in an attempt to understand the nature and extent of these gas-bearing horizons which are considered to be one of the potential energy sources and also as one of the powerful greenhouse gases.

Altogether, published 24 research papers in various International and National journals. In addition, he had contributed to various National and International seminars and Symposia (11), and had 6 technical reports to his credit.
