  Objectives /Scope of the Project :

  i ) Evaluation of microfilm formation over different materials in relation to physico-chemical, biological and biochemical parameters.

  ii ) Interaction between microfilm and recruitment of the larvae of fouling organisms.

  Present Status :

  i ) Evaluation of microfilm over fibreglass, glass, polystyrene, stainless steel, aluminium and cupronickel surfaces at Dona-Paula Bay.

  ii ) Rearing of Balanus amphitrite larvae to identify the starvation threshold.

  iii ) Influence of bacterial expolymers and adult extract on the larval induction of Balanus amphitrite.

  i ) Investigations on temporal and substratum variability in microfilm formation and the role of diatom community in microfilm formation.

  ii ) Studies on the influence of bacterial exopolymers and the adult extract of Balanus amphitrite on cyprid metamorphosis.

• Scientific importance : Biodeterioration of materials in the marine environment is influenced by the event of microfilm formation. The larvae of fouling organisms respond to induction cues from the microfilm. This effort evaluates such processes in the tropical marine environment.
