Development of " Brown water" algorithms for measuring phytoplankton biomass and primary productivity in the Arabian sea and Bay of Bengal. Development of "compound algorithms" for estimating export production from remotely sensed data Determination of the effect of physical and chemical forcing on primary production , export production and biogeochemical fluxes in coastal upwelling regions, across fronts and other special areas of coastal waters.

Development of a suite of biological techniques to constitute a sensitive, early warning system for chemical pollution of coastal waters. Scaling up for field application the process of decolorisation of paper mill effluent using fungal culture Application for laboratory - selected consortia of microbes to combat oil pollution in the field Optimization of biosurfactant production in marine fungi (especially marine yeasts) to combat toxi organic compounds (eg. pesticides) pollution and for possible industrial applications.

Temporal variation & fate of riverine inputs to the Ocean Atmospheric inputs to the coastal zone Quantification of material exchange across the shelf edge. Material balance in the coastal ecosystem with emphasizing on carbon cycling. Estimation of emission of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane and di-methyl sulphide. Studies on air sea interaction processes over the tropical Indian ocean in relation to summer monsoon using satellite data.

OBJECTIVES

Evaluation of some passive microwave precipitation algorithms for the Indian Ocean. To study the interannual variation of evaporation , precipitation, SST and moisture flux over the tropical Indian Ocean for a period of 5 years (1988 to 1992) To identify the convectively active regions over the Indian Ocean and their role in the monsoon activity over the sub-continent. To Study the air-sea interaction processess during contrasting monsoon years (1987 and 1988).

Surveys for Polymetallic Nodules in the central Indian Basin

OBJECTIVES

Survey & exploration for the seamount cobalt crusts in selected parts of the northern Indian Ocean to assess the potential of the crusts for cobalt metal Detailed geochemistry ,structural analyses and dating of the representative crusts to establish the paleo-OMZ, paleo productivity influence on the crust genesis and growth. Foram stratigraphy and climatic variations recorded in the sediment cores collected from areas in the viccinity of the seamounts to nderstand the effect of topographic high. Bio-geochemistry of the sediment cores to evaluate the organic matter accumulation over a time period and to assess the paleoproductivity and paleoenvironments on the nature and distribution of biogeochemical markers To study the microbial production rates and biomass in the typically oligotrophic equatorial Indian ocean water column.
