New Horizons for Jute

The Report :

This State-of-the-Art Report on New Horizons for Jute briefly describes the jute economy, with special reference to Bangladesh and India in relation to trends inn consumption, production and prices of raw jute. Chapter 2 relates to jute manufactures in terms of structure of industry, productivity, problems. Chapter 3, on markets, provides facts and figures for the raw jute and jute products. Chapter 4, elaborates the growing range of new and diversified products from jute, household fabrics, jute laminates and composites for rigid and semi-rigid packaging, jute soft luggage, jute blends and also touches upon the problems faced in the development and export of diversified jute products.

Chapters 5 and 6, appropriately examine special interests in jute due to the environmental friendly nature of jute, as well as the role of the International Jute Organisation in giving shape to the future hopes for jute as embodied in the relatively recent International Agreement on Jute and Jute Products, by twenty-eight countries, both producing and consuming jute and jute goods.

The report attempts to draw some conclusions and has a few references, tables and annexures for a more detailed and precise understanding of the jute economy.

The Authors :

Dr. S R Ranganathan has been with the International Jute Organisation, Dhaka, Bangladesh, since 1991 as a Consultant (Industry) and has specialised knowledge and wide experience in jute, textiles and related technologies. Earlier he was the Director of IJIRA, Calcutta. He is currently also a Project Executing Agent for one of the Jute R & D projects of IJO sponsored by the CFC, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Mr. Zahidul Quayyum - Since 1987 he has been with IJO, as a Statistical Officer and is responsible for reporting regularly on world jute situation and its outlook.
