The publication follows the apparel industry from its inception to its present state, analyses the various production and distribution aspects for both domestic as well as export market, policy regarding the industry and its future prospects.
The slim volume packs considerable material which will be exciting to all who are connected with the textile scene. The apparel industry in India has grown with explosive force in the last decade. What is less well known is that the domestic market for ready-made garments is even larger. Our publication examines the history of the apparel indsutry in our country in terms of structure, location, investment, manpower, costs and linkages. There is a detailed examination of the domestic market and its structure. This is followed by an analysis of the export market for Indian apparel in the context of international trade in garments. Government policies which have a bearing on the industry have been analysed. The report ends with some thoughts on what the future holds for this very promising Indian Industry which is spread across the large, medium and small sectors. The Author :
Ms Ila Kantilal obtained her bachelor's degree in Economics and master's degree in Commerce. At present she is engaged in her doctoral work on determinants of profitability in the textile industry. Having a textile family background, she developed an interest in textile management research and since 1982, has been associated with the C.L. Centre for Management at ATIRA in an honorary capacity. She has co-authored many publications and also participated actively in seminars relating to textile policy and management.
