30 Years Memoir
NIO started functioning from 1st January , 1966 taking over all the units and activities of the Indian Ocean Expedition Directorate with Late Dr. N. K. Panikkar as Director and Head Quarters at New Delhi. A training programme in Oceanography sponsored by UNESCO and NIO was held in Bombay on 21 january, 1966. A 3-day Symposium on "Coastal and Nearshore Oceanography" was organised jointly by the INCOR and NIO on 4 November, 1966 at the Central Institute of Fisheries Operatives, Ernakulam.
A Symposium on "Indian Ocean" was organised by the INCOR (CSIR) and the National Institute of Sciences of India during 2-4 March, 1967 at New Delhi.
The Fifteenth Meeting of the Indian National Commitee on Oceanic Research was held at CSIR, New Delhi on 24 May, 1968 under the Chairmanship of D.N. Wadia.
The Headquarters of NIO was shifted from New Delhi to Panaji, Goa. A seminar on "Monsoonal Changes in the Zooplankton of the Cochin Backwaters" was held in july,1969.
The international Indian ocean Expedition (IIOE) Atlas on the Distribution of Fish Eggs and Larvae in the Indian Ocean was released on 24 April , 1970 by DGSIR at CSIR, New Delhi.
An IIOE Plankton Atlas on Copepoda and Decapoda Larvae was released by the Lt. Governor of Goa, Daman & Diu Shri Nakul Sen, on 9 September, 1970.
Dr. S.Z. Qasim took over as Director on 7 January 1974. NIO was shifted to the present premises.
Prof. Y. Nayudamma, DGSIR visited NIO on 18 & 19 June,1975 and addressed the Scientists. R.V. Gaveshani, the institute's first research vessel was commisioned on 31 December, 1975.
A regional centre of NIO at Waltair started functioning on 1st November 1976.
A national seminar on "coastal Engineering " was organised during 24th and 25th March 1977.
A Indo-US workshop on oceanography sponsored by DST , New Delhi for collaboration in Oceanography was organised in November 1978.
An international seminar on India and Eastern African Littoral, Hinterland and Island state : area s of co-opreation co-sponsored by the Indian council for cultural relation for centre of Eastern Afican studies, Bombay Universities was held at NIO during 16 - 18 January 1980.
Seminar on Protection and Control of Coastal Erosion in India was held at NIO during 16 - 17th may 1980 which was inaugurated by Nurul Hassan , Vice President of CSIR.
NIO Scientists hauled up the first samples of manganese nodules in the Western Indian Ocean on 26 January, 1981
The Seventh Annual Convention of the Association of Exploration Geophysicists and Seminar on Exploration Geophysics was held at NIO during 5-17 October 1981.
The First Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica landed on Antarctica on 9 January, 1982
Completion of 100 Cruises of R.V. Gaveshani was celebrated on 24 February, 1982.
NIO hosted the 15th Session of the Sir Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Memorial Tournaments during 2-11 Novembet, 1982.
ORV Sagar Kanya was handed over to NIO on 27 June, 1983 by the Secretary, DOD.
Shri Pratap Singh Rane, Chief Minister of Goa, Daman & Diu inaugurated the first cruise of ORV Sagar Kanya on 11 July, 1983.
NIO hosted the 53rd Annual Session of the National Academy of Sciences, India during 27-29 October, 1983.
An Indo-FRG Workshop on "Marine Sciences for collaboration in oceanographic research between the two Countries was organised 26-31 October, 1984.
A Seminar was organised with the assistance of the Norwegian Agency for International Development (NORAD). "Acquisition, Processing and Interpretation of Analog and Multi-channel Seismic Data" at NIO during 12-18 November, 1984.
A new Computer ND-520 was installed at NIO on 22 February, 1985.
The First Indo-USSR Workshop on "Oceanography" was held at NIO during 9-13 December, 1985.
A Regional Seminar on "Handling and Dissemination of Oceanographic Information and Data" supported by UNESCO and IOC Paris was held at NIO during 17-21 March, 1986.
A high power delegation from USSR led by Academician G.I. Marchuk visited NIO on 19 March, 1987 for discussions on Indo-USSR collaborative programmes in Oceanography.
A five day Hindi Workshop was organised at NIO during 18-22 May, 1987.
A National Confrence of "Ocean Technology for the 21st century" sponsored by the Department of Science and Techonology, DOD and NIO was held at NIO during 16-18 June, 1987.
Dr. S.Z. Qasim was felicitated on completing 60 years of dedicated life at a function held at NIO, on 16 june, 1987.
NIO participated in the International Ocean Festival organised by the Govt. of Mauritius by holding an exhibition on Ocean Research in India onboard ORV Sargar Kanya at Port Louis, Mauritius during 4-13 September, 1987.
A GECO Mapping System (GMS) Workshop was organised at NIO under the Indo-NORAD collaborative programme during 17-26 March, 1988.
NIO hosted a Workshop on Pan-Indian Terminology of Oceanographic terms during 9-15 June, 1988 under the auspices of the Commission of Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT), Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India.
NIO participated in the Indian Trade Exhibition held at Moka, Mauritius during 17 August to 4 September 1988 orgainsed by the Trade Fair Authority of India.
A National Workshop on "Oceanography of EEZ" was organised at NIO during 25-26 October , 1988.
A work shop on "Sea Level Rise due to Greenhouse Effect: Implications for India" was organised at NIO on 27 October, 1988.
A seminar on "Management of Aquatic Ecosystems" under the auspices of Society of Biosciences, India was organised at NIO during 9-11 December, 1988.
A team of remote sensing experts from the European Space Agency (ESA) visited NIO for discussions and making presentation on ocean applications of ERS - 1 data during November, 1988.
A new Field Laboratory of NIO was inaugurated at Port Blair on 4 April, 1989 by Lt. Governor Lt. General (Retd.) T.S. Oberoi.
The new Computer Centre was inaugurated by Dr. A.P. Mitra, DG, CSIR on 14 April , 1989.
NIO participated at the All India Science & Technology Demonstartion Campaign held at Ottapalam, Kerala during 1-14 September, 1989.
NIO's Research Vessel Gaveshani was decomissioned on 1 October, 1989 at a function organised at Mormugao Harbour
NIO participated in the Indian Science Congress Exhibition held at Cochin during 28 January to 17 February, 1990.
A new Field Station of NIO "Corallite" was inaugurated at Kalpeni Island, Lakshadweep on 20 February, 1990.
A team of NIO Scientists undertook the exploration of Carribean waters on board ORV Sagar Kanya during 14 April to 28 May, 1990.
A Hindi Week and a Hindi Workshop were held at NIO during 25-28 September, 1990.
As a part of CSIR Golden Jubilee Celebrations NIO organised symposium on Ocean Technology during 27 - 29 August 1991.
An international workshop on "Global Oceanographic & Research (GODAR) was held during 6 -9 December . Data in danger to be rescued. About a dozen from other countries participated.
