NIO started functioning with taking over all the units and activities of the Indian Ocean Expedition Directorate with Late Dr. N. K. Panikar as Director and Head Quarters at New Delhi. Dr. D. N. Wadia was nominated as the Chairman of the Executive Council.

A Training Programme in Oceanography sponsored by UNESCO was held at Mumbai.

November 4

A 3 day Symposium on "Coastal and Nearshore Oceanography" was organised jointly by the INCOR and NIO at the Central Institute of Fisheries Operatives, Kochi.
