In the Indian Mythological literature (Vedic Times, 2500-1500 B.C.), we see, references to the sea (Sagara or Samudra) as the repository of riches of all types and particularly 'Amrita' the beverage of immortality. In fact there is a fascinating account of the groups of people, the devas and the asuras churning the ocean using a gigantic snake as the rope and a mountain as the churner to get 'Amrita - Ambrosia'. This story popularly known as "Samudra Manthan". As a result of this churning, the ocean brought forth many gifts to both the groups.
