The centre stareted to function in National Institute of oceanography (NIO) since its inception in 1966. Being a national facility for management of oceanographic data the centre is responsible to provide oceanographic information/data and developed knowledge base to maximise the economic, environmental and societal benifits at national and international levels.The centre ensures that the user gets quality data. As a nodal point for the Indian ocean datamanagement the centre has been recognised as Responsible National Oceanographic Data Centre ( RNODC) for Indian ocean by IODE of IOC.
