Dr Raghunath Anant Mashelkar

Dr Raghunath Anant Mashelkar took over as Director General, Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) and Secretary, Department of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR) in June 1995.

Born on 1 January, 1943, Dr Mashelkar holds B. Chem.Engg. (1966) & Ph.D. (1969) from University of Bombay. He was Leverhume Research Fellow (1969-70) and Lecturer in Chemical Engineering (1970-76) at the University of Salford, U.K. He joined CSIR as Asst. Director (1976-May 1989) at the National Chemical Laboratory (NCL), Pune. He was the Director of NCL, Pune from June, 1989 to June 1995, till he took over as Director General CSIR and Secretary, Department of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR), Govt. of India.

Dr Mashelkar's original contributions to polymer science & technology, relate to modelling of industrial polymerisation reactors, molecular and convective diffusion phenomena in polymeric media, transport phenomena in swelling, superswelling and shrinking polymers; and engineering analysis of non-Newtonian flows. He has been an active consultant to Indian industry and leading companies in USA & Europe. He has to his credit over 180 research papers in reputed journals and has edited 16 books.

Awards and Honours received by Dr Mashelkar includes Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize (1982), Herdillia Award (1982), Santappa Silver Jubilee Award (1983), Chinnamaul Memorial Prize (1983), UDCT Outstanding Alumni Medal (1984), K.G. Naik Gold Medal (1985), FICCI Award (1987), Viswakarma Medal (1988), Padmashri (1991), O.P. Bhasin Award (1991), G.D. Birla Award for Scientific Research (1993), Honorary Doctorate of Science, University of Salford, UK (1993), UDCT Diamond (1994), Raj Kristo Dutt Memorial Award (Indian Science Congress Association (1994-95)) and NRDC Republic Day Award (1995).
