The National Institute of Oceanography (NIO), a constituent laboratory of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) was founded in 1966 and conducts basic and applied research on various aspects of ocean science - Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology/Geophysics, Marine Instrumentation, Ocean Engineering, Biofouling & Corrosion etc. It is situated in Goa, with regional centres in Mumbai, Kochi, Visakhapatnam. It has a total strength of 650 of whom 220 are scientists.
The NIO has an annual budget from CSIR of over Rs. 170 million (1998) and earns an almost equal amount from Industry, Govt. of India, science departments, and through bilateral programs.
The new emphasis that the CSIR is giving to its laboratories demands that we move our science thrust into interdisciplinary projects that optimise our time at sea, and address problems with new angles of approach.
The Institute is looking for a bright, reasonably young scientist with a Ph.D, who has a track record of interdisciplinary work in oceanography, with high quality research publications and who has received recognition in terms of national and international awards. Age should not exceed 45 years as on 30.09.98.
The candidate will be expected to be a focal point in an emerging area of ocean science and devote time in interacting and advising Director on research programs and proposals.
