INDIAN INSTITUTE
OF CHEMICAL BIOLOGY (IICB)
MANDATE
- To conduct research
in biological sciences for seeking solution to medical and biological problems
faced by the country and to utilize the results for biotechnological and
biomedical applications.
- To utilize R
& D expertise and resources for research in frontier areas of modern
biology.
MAIN FACILITIES
A wide range of
facilities are available in the institute which include:
- DNA synthesizer.
- Refrigerated
centrifuges, ultracentrifuges and freeze dryers.
- Fraction collectors,
microfermentor and amino acid analysers.
- Liquid scintillation
counters.
- Spectrophotometers,
spectrofluorimeters, NMR, GC-mass spectrometer, transmission electron microscope,
ORD-CD and HPLC equipment.
- Computer facilities.
- Library.
- Modern animal
house.
SIGNIFICANT
ACHIEVEMENTS
- IICB has developed
a bacteriophage typing technique for identifying cholera infection, which
has become widely accepted and won recognition of WHO.
- Methods have
been evolved for preparation of high-value lectins from cheap agricultural
and marine residue.
- A wild weed
Kallstroemia pubescent has been identified to be violable alternative source
diosgenin, a steroid drug intermediate.
- A process for
chemical conversion of quinine sulphate to quinidine sulphate, an anti-arrhythymic
drug has been liscenced to the industry.
- Immunoassay
kits have been developed for estimating testosterone, cortisol, tridothyronine,
and thyroxine.
- A Leishmania
strain bank has been established in the institute.
