CENTRAL MINING
RESEARCH INSTITUTE (CMRI)
MANDATE
- To carry out
R & D activities in the field of rock mechanics and mining methods
and mine environment and safety.
- To develop mine
machinery equipment and instruments to make mining safe, productive, environmental-friendly
and productive.
- To develop ways
of reducing environmental pollution due to mining, and minimizing health
hazards to miners.
MAIN FACILITIES
- Testing of materials
for their chemical components and physical and mechanical parameters; testing
of wire rope, cage and suspension gear components and other mining machine
parts.
- Composition
analysis of coal and areas and minerals of various types.
- Testing of electrical
equipment used in mines, petrochemical and fertilizer industry with regard
to their flame and weather proofness; testing of flammability of various
products used in mines.
- Certification
and testing of explosives and accessories for use in underground mines.
- Testing of physio-mechanical
properties of rock and coal samples.
- Facilities of
computer modelling.
- Database on
information relating to the country's mineral resources and mining industry.
SIGNIFICANT
ACHIEVEMENTS
- CMRI work on
cable bolting and underground pillar design has helped in the recovery
of otherwise difficult to extract coal from Indian coal mines.
- The long wall
mining technique perfected by CMRI has helped in the successful adaptation
of mechanized long wall systems over diverse geomining conditions.
- Modification,
improvement and adaptation of various new techniques such as narrow panel
system of mining, wide stall mining, inclined slicing, with mixed support,
etc., have enabled extraction of coal under complex mining conditions e.g.
under surface structures and water bodies.
- Prediction and
control subsidence based on two- and three- dimension numerical modelling
and field observation have helped the mining industry to extract coal underneath
and in vicinity of surface features and structures, railway lines, water
bodies, etc.
- Design of new
hydraulic stowing systems and improvement of existing stowing plants for
coal mining and of the method of back fill in mines have improved the mining
productivity.
- Improvement
in technology of ventilation network planning including the development
of multizonal ventilation system, and utilization of the technique of pressure
balancing have improved the working environment and safety in mines.
- Safe design
and stabilization of tunnels, roadways, hydraulic dams and underground
structures and associated underground excavations in plains and hilly areas.
- Monitoring and
control of blasting biodegasification , fire hazards and its control, air
and water pollution assessment and its control, communication and data
monitoring, design and development of mining equipment and instruments,
machine condition monitoring, an duplication of cryogenic technology for
control of coal mine fire and quick reopening of mines.
- Reclamation
and use of mine waste.
- Land use evaluation
and management through remote sensing.
- Hydrological
studies for supply of safe drinking water in mining areas.
- Design and construction
of a model low-cost house for slum dwellers.
- The equipment/machineary
developed include: high set remote prop,; digital temperature indicator;
data acquisition and mine management systems; release device for steel
rigid prop; surface air lock; low cost hydraulic prop; coal getting machine;
roof bolt setter; cable bolt for depillaring of thick coal seams; heat
resistant explosive composition; low power and portable data logger; and
environment-friendly waste loading system.
