CENTRAL ELECTRO-CHEMICAL
RESEARCH INSTITUTE (CECRI)
MANDATE
- To conduct research
in different areas of electrochemistry and allied fields.
- To develop new
processes and products in the area s of its specialization with a view
to providing import substitution and increasing export potential of the
country.
- To help both
Indian industry and government departments through consultancy, contract
research and training.
- To contribute
to human resource development through formal university-level courses in
electrochemical engineering and technology and refresher courses in corrosion
prevention,
industrial metal
finishing, batteries, etc.
MAIN FACILITIES
- Modern analytical
facilities e.g. high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography,
gel permeation chromatography, IR, UV and atomic absorption spectrometers,
X-ray powder diffractometers, scanning electron microscope, and elemental
analyzer.
- A betatron radiographic
instrument for monitoring corrosion in reinforced and pre stressed concrete
structures.
- Microvax computer
system.
- Facilities for
testing batteries (at madras unit).
SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENTS
- Technologies
have been developed for making Lead-acid batteries for normal and low-temperature
applications, and maintenance free (MF) lead acid batteries.
- Technologies
have been developed for metal finishing plants for anodizing plating and
production of concentrates for Pt, Pd, selective high speed gold and decorative
gold plating.
- Technology developed
for the production of titanium substrate insoluble anodes (TSIA) is being
widely used in chlor-alkali and other electrochemical industries and has
led to saving of millions of rupees in the chlor-alkali sector alone.
- Membrane cell
technology has been developed for the production of NaOH and KOH.
- Processes have
been developed for the energy-efficient production of potassium per chlorate,
potassium iodate, and calcium gluconate and manganese dioxide.
- Technologies
have been developed for the production of sodium misch metal (mixture of
rare earths) and chromium powder and for the recovery of gallium from Bayer
liquor.
- Process know-hows
have been developed for the production of magnesiun-silver chloride, magnesium-cuprous
chloride, and nickel iron batteries.
- CECRI
Processes for copper plating to stainless steel vessels is widely used
to save on cooking fuel.Technology has also been developed for color coating
of stainless steel for decorative applications.
- CECRI has developed
cathodic protection technology using sacrificial impressed current system
for any structure.
- Knowhows have
been developed for corrosion controls for reinforced steels in RCC constructions, namely
- Anticorrosion
treatment to reinforced steel.
- Cement polymer
composite coating to reinforced steel.
- Passivating
solution for protection of steel while lying in cable duct.
- Inhibitor admixture
to cement grout for protecting prestressing steel.
- CECRI has developed
expertise for monitoring corrosion levels in bridges and innovative solutions
for protecting pre stressed steel in concrete structures;knowhow has also
been developed for supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) for
monitoring corrosion rates in off shore structures automatically and applying
corrective measures by remote control.
