CENTRAL BUILDING
RESEARCH INSTITUTE (CBRI)
MANDATE
- To assist the
building industry in solving problems relating to planning, foundations,
materials, design and construction, functional efficiency, speed, economy
and productivity in building construction.
- To carry out
R & D on fire hazards in building to help reduce loss of life and materials.
- To dessimate
information regarding results of research among potential users and to
ensure, through appropriate measures, that they find expeditious and efficient
application.
MAIN FACILITIES
- Modern analytical/characterization
facilities.
- Inclinometer,
georadar, terrameter, GDS soil testing meter, laser particle size analyser,
electronic distance meter, etc.
- Foundation pile
diagnostic system.
- National fire
testing facility.
- Computer facilities.
- A well-equipped
workshop.
- Library.
SIGNIFICANT
ACHIEVEMENTS
- Formulation
of space and land use standards, planning & design of economic buildings
based on passive technologies, and formulation of design briefs.
- Design, development
of space norms, planning guidelines for primary and secondary school buildings,
and use of cost-saving construction materials and technologies. CBRI is
the nodal agency for the construction of Navodaya Vidyalayas in different
parts of the country.
- Planning, design
& construction of low-cost rural houses; use of locally available materials
in the construction techniques for rural buildings; work has also been
carried out on low-cost waste disposal systems, water seal latrines, biogas
plants for individual and village communities.
- Development
of processes and technologies for the manufacture improved building materials
from natural resources; process technologies for utilization of mineral
and industrial wastes; design and development of pollution-free brick and
lime kilns.
- Development
of processes for products based on plastics and polymers, and processes
for utilization of agrowastes in the manufacture of building materials,
anti-corrosive treatments for metals and concrete.
- Development
and design of economical foundations for buildings, under-reamed bored
compaction, precase spliced, skirted granular and pedestal piles; studies
of foundation failures, geotechnical and soil investigations, georadar
investigations and landslide related investigations and studies.
- Studies of buildings
in distress and remedial measures thereof. Development of computer software
for special structural problems, prestressed and prefabricated RCC flooring/roofing
& walling components, prefab ferrocement building components.
- Engineering
of structures for mitigating damage due to natural disasters e.g cyclones
and earthquakes.
- Development
of equipment for mechanizing building construction activities, in situ
soil investigations, production of building materials and prefabricated
building construction components.
- Studies related
to ventilation of residential & industrial buildings, chimney design
for removal of smoke, orientation of buildings, design criteria for natural
and artificial lights, thermal design of buildings, evaluation of insulating
and acoustic performance of new materials.
- Studies on fore
hazard and analysis such as non-combustability, ignitability, fire propagation,
surface spread of flames, fire retardant treatments, post fire investigations,
development of fire alarm systems, sprinklers, extinguishing methods and
equipment.
