NorthEast Water Polynya (NEWP) Current Meter Data Download Current Meter Data -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Master T-S diagram from all current meter data. Local water masses are shown by shading, with Atlantic Water (AW), knee water (KW), and polar water (PW) marked. Locally formed Polar intermediate water (PIW) is shown near the freezing line in the lower left. Also marked (shaded area) are the water mass characteristics at 75 and 150m for the East Greenland Current, as sampled by Bourke et al (1987). Generally, the 75m data is PW, the 150m data is KW, and the 250m data is AIW. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- T-S diagrams of mooring A for each quarter starting Jul-Sept in the upper left. In Jan-Mar, the meter at 150m freshens and cools, demonstrating that the locally formed PIW is now found as deep as 150m, in contrast to the rest of the year. Also note that the T-S characteristics at 250m during Jul-Sep are nearly constant, but freshen toward Oct-Dec, then cool in Jan-Mar, then become slightly warmer and more saline in spring and summer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mooring C also provides evidence for PIW in Jan-Mar at 150m, as well as possible evidence for staight line mixing to the freezing line at salinities slightly less than 34. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This data set is subject to updates.
