README FILE FOR THE JOINT US-RUSSIAN ARCTIC OCEAN ATLAS This is the readme file for the Arctic Climatology CD-ROM Atlas for the summer period. If you already have a web browser installed, simply open the file atlas\welcome.htm. If you have any questions, refer the file help.htm or this document. This document is essentially the same as the help file. INSTALLING MOSAIC If you install Mosaic, please refer to the Mosaic license agreement in the file \mosaic\document\licensng.faq and copyright notice in \mosaic\document\cpyright.txt. If you already have a web browser on your system, there is no need to install Mosaic. Mosaic has been included as a courtesy to those who do not already have a browser. This CD includes the binaries for Mosaic for most platforms, including Windows (3.1 and higher), Macintosh, UNIX for several different processors, and Windows NT for several different processors. Even if you operate a UNIX system you will not need to compile the program. To install Mosaic, pick the version of Mosaic that is appropriate for your computer from the Mosaic directory (for example, if you have a Windows95 machine, run the file mosaic\win95_NT\mos30.exe) The windows files are either self-installing (just run the file and it will be installed) or self-extracting files (when the file is run it will expand into several files, one of which is the program SETUP.EXE, which should then be run). The Macintosh files are binhexed stuffit files. The Binhex and Unstuffit utilities for Macintosh are available via anonymous ftp from ftp://ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu/Mac/Utilities/ or ftp://ftp.aladdinsys.com/Pub/. The UNIX files are compressed; run 'uncompress' to expand the file to the executable. Additional questions about using Mosaic should be directed to NCSA, who can be reached on the World Wide Web at http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu. GENERAL INFORMATION The contents of the atlas are best viewed on a machine with at least 16 bit color. This can also be known as the "thousands of colors" mode or the "high color" mode. The bulk of the contents of this atlas are viewable with any standard web browser. The atlas has been tested with Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, and NCSA Mosaic. Because some important features do not function under all platforms of Mosaic (such as image maps and links within tables), we recommend the use of either Netscape or Internet Explorer. If only Mosaic is available and you are having problems viewing parts of the atlas, you can use Mosaic to download another browser (go to one of the sites listed at the bottom of this page). Most graphical browsers will be usable; due to the highly graphical nature of the atlas, text-only browsers will not work well. The atlas is most user-friendly if the browser you are using fully supports tables and client side image maps. CONFIGURING YOUR BROWSER A minimum amount of configuration may be required to view data file and movies. Some browsers do not immediately recognize what to do with certain types of text files. It may be necessary to define a "helper application" to view digital data files. Netscape and Internet Explorer should function without any special setup. If configuration is required, it should only need to be done once. The helper application definition is done by associating what's called a "MIME file type" and file extension with a viewer application. For the digital data files, define the type "text/atlas" with extensions ".3gr",".2gr",".2ge",".sta",".pro" and ".msk". Each of the digital files is a columnated ASCII file with a small header and can be viewed with your favorite text editor or spreadsheet application. If you are using Mosaic for Windows, these associations are made under the Options--Preferences--Viewers menu. On Mosaic for the Macintosh, these associations are made under the Options--Apps--Helper Apps menu. For more information or for setup on other browsers, consult the browser's documentation or your local computer administrator. MOVING THROUGH THE ATLAS The entire atlas is based on the standard language of the World Wide Web, HTML. As such, moving through the atlas is exactly the same as moving through a WWW site; all of the standard browser options (e.g. the forward and backward buttons) will work. In addition, every page will have buttons at the top of the page that will aid navigation. These will always include a "Top" button and a "contents" button which will take the viewer to the welcome page or the main table of contents respectively. For the table of contents page, clicking the seal in the center of the image will take you to the welcome page. The atlas is divided into several sections, each one accessible from the main table of contents (e.g. introduction, methods, etc.). Within each section, several more buttons are available. These include "Up","Next", and "Previous". The "Up" button will take you up one level (usually to the subsection's table of contents), and the "Next" or "Previous" buttons (when available) allow quick movement through the current level (i.e, the next and previous listing in the section's table of contents). USING THE CLIMATIC ATLAS Each of the pages in the climatic atlas will present you with a grid of choices. Clicking on the grid cell will show you an image of the corresponding data in the atlas. You can use the "Up" button to return to the data grid, or click on "Next" and "Previous" to see different maps. See the digital atlas for the raw data used to generate these images (the temperature, salinity, and density images were generated using the SA method). USING THE DIGITAL ATLAS Each of the pages in the digital atlas will present you with a grid of choices. Clicking on the grid cell will show you the data file from the atlas. If you view the data with the browser, it will be necessary to use the "back" button on the toolbar to return to the data grid. DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE Note: You must have an active Internet connection to download software. If you are viewing this file with a relatively recent web browser, you shouldn't need to get an updated version to view the files on this atlas.
