MAFF has noted that speeds in this record were at or near threshhold
in three places: lines 2131 through 2830 (0537 1 Oct 88 through 0837
30 Oct 88), lines 3747 through 3798 (1337 7 Dec 88 through 1637 9 Dec 88),
and from line 4429 through the end of the file (2337 4 Jan 88 onward).
These episodes almost certainly are due to a sensor malfunction and have
not been included here, nor were they used in calculating the statistics
shown here. Direction is available for the entire deployment, however.

From early November onward the speed series is somewhat spikey and
contains unusual sequences of highs and lows. CMDAC believes these data
should be used with caution, and has prepared an alternate file in which
the least credible speed spikes, together with a few anomalous directions,
have been smoothed by linear interpolation. The speed series remains
questionable after mid-November, however. Both the original file and the
alternate version are available at this site.
