R/V MOANA WAVE (LEG 2) - OCEANOGRAPHIC DATA B. Smyth (OSU, USA) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Announced availability: 1 May 1995 Last modified: 9 November 1995 Data Access R/V Moana Wave oceanographic data are available from the TOGA COARE International Project Office (TCIPO). Data can be accessed via anonymous FTP from tcdm.coare.ucar.edu in subdirectory pub/COARE_DATA/ocean_mixing/Moana_chamel. Data are also available upon request from NOAA's National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) in Washington, D.C. Background The data were obtained during leg 2, aboard the R/V Moana Wave, which remained approximately stationary at 1.75S, 156E from 20 December 1992 to 11 January 1993 during COARE. Currents were measured from shipboard ADCP, with frequency 150 kHz, bin length 4 m and pulse length 8 m. The remaining quantities were measured using the CHAMELEON microstructure profiler, which executed 6-8 profiles per hour during most of the cruise. (Profiling was suspended for about one hour each day near local noon (0100 GMT) for other ship operations.) The accompanying files contain temperature, salinity, density, zonal and meridional currents, and dissipation rates for turbulent kinetic energy and temperature variance. Data File Information Directory name: Moana_Chamel Number of data files: 7 Dataset format: ASCII Dataset volume: 532 KB File Format Each ASCII file contains approximately 550 rows of data, each of which pertains to a single hour. The first column gives the time at the center of the hour as year day 1992, i.e., midnight GMT, 1 January 1992 = 1.0. Day 355 = 20 December. The remaining 63 columns give data for the depth bins centered at 2 m, 6 m, 10 m, ... Missing data is indicated by the value 999.0. Data Processing Data have been averaged into bins spanning one hour and 4 meters in the vertical. The first depth bin is centered at 2 m. Collection of this data was funded by NSF grant ATM-9110552. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more information, please contact : Bill Smyth College of Oceanic & Atmospheric Sciences Oregon State University Corvallis, OR 97331-5300 USA email: smyth@oce.orst.edu Phone: (503) 737-3029 FAX: (503) 737-2064 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- www/data/ocean_mixing/mw_cham.html
