Data collected from two cruises, one in late 1992 and the other in early 1993. Whenever the drifter began to head out of the IFA, or needed servicing it was removed from the water and redeployed. As a result six sets of data were collected, as outlined below. Temperature, Conductivity, Pressure and Light data were collected. The light data has not been processed. cruise drift period (Eastern Standard Time) number of casts (*) FR9/92 1 1024, 25/11/92 to 0628, 26/11/92 302 FR9/92 2 1821, 3/12/92 to 1553, 8/12/92 1764 FR9/92 3 0447 10/12/92 to 1055, 10/12/92 93 FR1/93 1 0841, 13/1/93 to 0653 20/1/93 2494 FR1/93 2 data not yet finalised FR1/93 3 data not yet finalised (* cast refers to all data collected in a 4 minute window) #PLATFORM_TYPE: (fixed buoy, drifting buoy, ship, aircraft) ship #PLATFORM_NAME: (ship name amd call sign, aircraft name and call sign) R V Franklin (VJJF) #COLLECTION_METHODS: (how observations were made) The seasoar, equipped with an internal CTD unit was towed around a generally bow-tie shaped track with the bow centred adjacent to a drifting buoy. The ship speed was about 8 kts and the drifter was passed about every four hours. About twice per day, coinciding with passing the drifter the Seasoar was retrieved and the CTD removed and placed on to a Rosette frame. A CTD was then taken to 200m depth, with samples collected on the upcast for calibration purposes. Whilst deployed the Seasaor followed a sawtooth flight path sampling between the surface and 200m, doing one cycle in about 7-8 minutes. At times when the Seasoar was inboard, CTD's were taken regularly (near the drifter) to obtain some continuity in the data set. #PROCESSING_METHODS: (how data are obtained from observations, including calibration information) Data from the CTD aboard the Seasoar was divided up into 4 minute windows to constitue a single 'cast', analagous to the data collected by a conventional CTD dip. This data was used to produce 2 dBar averaged data centred on even pressures, data in the top 1 dBar was averaged to produce a value for 0 dBar. Our CTD data is dealt with in a similar manner. Salinity samples collected from CTD's post Seasoar recovery were analysed with a salinometer and used to calibrate the conductivity cell. Special care went into ensuring the zero offset of the pressure sensor was correctly accounted for. #ANALYSIS_METHODS: (any laboratory methods to obtain data) Inductive Salinometer used to determine the calibration of the CTD conductivity cell. #INSTRUMENTS: ( instruments and sensor packages used to obtain observations) Neil Brown Mark 3 CTD unit used aboard the Seasoar. #PUBLICATIONS: (any publications refering to these data) #ASSOCIATED_DATASETS: (data collected with, or by associated experiments, but not included ) Similar data collected on R V Franklin cruise 7, 1990 in the Bismarck Sea, R V Franklin cruise 9, 1994 in the Equatorial Indian Ocean. #ASSOCIATED_VERSIONS: ( the same data at lower, or higher processing levels submitted anyone ) Some data has been worked up for 0.5 dBar averages. ** #DATA_SET_NAME: (name used by NODC to identify data set ) #DATA_FILES: (number of submitted files in this data set, names and sizes; number of observations per file, record length and number of records) Four data files submitted to date (29/11/94), details below. cruise drift name of data file number of records number of casts FR9/92 1 drift1.dat 31446 302 FR9/92 2 drift2.dat 113734 1764 FR9/92 3 drift3.dat 9516 93 FR1/93 1 drift4.dat 204292 2494 (* cast refers to all data collected in a 4 minute window) #DOCUMENTATION_FILES: (number of submitted doc files, and names, not including this file) One file, or more correctly one email message with a section entitled "R.V.Franklin Seasoar Data-Some information about the files" #NUMBER_OF_OBSERVATIONS: (number of tows, stations, moorings, etc) see above. #DATA_SET_VOLUME: ( in uncompressed bytes) About 30 Megabytes. #SOURCE_COMPUTER: (last computer to write, or FTP data to NODC) ftp from a Silicon Graphics (unix) machine. #SOURCE_COMPUTER_OPERATING_SYSTEM: (SUN Unix, VAX/VMS, etc.) Unix #SOURCE_COMPUTER_LANGUAGE: (fortran c, c++) Fortran #COMPUTER_CHARACTER_CODE: (ASCII, binary, EBCDIC, etc) compressed Ascii #ORIGINATOR_DATASET_IDENTIFIER: (name used by originator to identify data set) #DATA_DATES: ( Start and end dates of data observation period of data set yyyymmdd-yyyymmdd) 19921125-19930120 #LEFT_GEOGRAPHIC_UPPER_BOUND: (latitude and longitude to nearest degree w/hemisphere) (use this for a single position, e. g. current meter) 155E, 1S (All data was collected in the IFA.) #RIGHT_GEOGRAPHIC_LOWER_BOUND: (latitude and longitude to nearest w/hemisphere) 157E, 3S (All data was collected in the IFA.) #DEPTH_RANGE: (minimum and maximum depth observations in meters) 0-200 m #GEOGRAPHIC_REGION: (name of ocean regions containing data ) Western Pacific #DATA_TYPE: (CTD, towed CTD, current meter, subsurface float, surface drifter biological, etc) ) Towed CTD (Seasoar) #PARAMETERS: (list of parameters, units, and resolutions) pressure dbar 2 dbar averages, centred on even values temperature C 0.001 salinity psu 0.001 sigma-t kg/m3 0.001 #FORMAT_DESCRIPTION: (a description of the data set format as detailed as possible. Header and data records described with units, precisions, etc ) 12 line header multiple cast files follow cast files have a 3 line header, includes time (midpoint of 4 minute window in both unix time (UTC) and dd-mmm-yy:hh:mm (Eastern Standard Time=EST). The mid-point position of the cast is included, together with its source, eg. GPS. The water depth is also given. Data for the cast follows the header, this consists of 2 dBar averages for temperature, salinity, sigma-t for all parts of the water column (0-200dbar) that were sampled during the cast. No oxygen data was collected. The identifier NaN is used where data isn't available. #FORMAT_PUBLICATION: (a format reference) #FORMAT_COMMENTS: (any additional explanation, or unusual items) No comments needed, the ascii format is self explanatory. #SAMPLE_DATA: ( a partial listing of ASCII data) File create at Tue Jul 12 07:03:25 GMT 1994 Nav keys are: (N) No data available, (G) GPS, (S) Satnav, (B) Back interpolated positions. Lower case (g, s or b) indicates processing of the nav data has been done. (i) Nav data has been interpolated, (e) Nav data has been extrapolated.
