-------------------- IGOR.TAR DATA SETS -------------------- ORIGINATORS FILE MANIPULATION: ------------------------------ *FILE-MERGING*: The originator's files consisted of a single file for each profile. Profiles from the same cruise had the same prefix, and a numerical extension representing the station number. Profiles from the same cruise (those having the same prefix) were concatenated into single files with the extensions ".BOT", ".HCTD", ".XBT". (Note: There are a few '.BOT' data with a ".dupGAP" extension. These are data where Lamont supplied the same cruise in 'clean' and 'uncleaned' format. In some cases, extra profiles were present in the 'uncleaned' format. Rather than throw these out when keeping only the 'clean' data, they were saved aside in a '.dupGAP' file. OCL converted these and used our own QC to determine if they were clean or not.) *PREFIX-RENAMING*: The originator's prefixes consisted of the NODC platform code followed by a "_" and either the cruise number or the year of the cruise. This was not consistent however. With the help of Dr. Igor Belkin, these files were updated to contain the correct shipcode and cruise number whenever possible. In addition, special project names (JARE, SAVE, AJAX) were used instead of ship codes in a few cases (shipcodes are also found in the header of each profile). Special Notes: Originator's cruise numbers are provided in the filename after the "_" unless this number equals the year of the cruise date. Originator's station numbers are only provided with the Igor SOA data (in the header). Station numbers provided in the headers otherwise are 95% of the time recalculated by Lamont. (These station numbers were assigned by Lamont. If original-originator's station numbers are present they are in the header.) CONVERSION COMMENTS: -------------------- Header information (i.e. LAT, LON, DATE, TIME) vary greatly in position between files, but their ordering is constant. OCL located each variable by scanning for the "." decimal in LATITUDE, then the "." in LONGITUDE, then the "/" in DATE (yy/mm/dd), and finally the ":" in TIME, if present. NOTE: That the DATE order varies. The only constant is that the month (mm) is in the middle. "yy/mm/dd" and "dd/mm/yy" can be distinguished by assuming all numbers less than 31 are days, and greater than that must be years. ... none of the cruises herein took place before 1932 ... Parameter Units: ----------------- Oxygen: 95% of the units are in "ml/l" units. The remaining oxygen had unit-values > 200. These units were found only within USSR cruise data. Based on documentation from similar cruises, these units were determined to be (mmol/m3). Nutrients: Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphate, Silcate = "ug-at/l" (or mmol/m3).
