***************************************************************** Journal for accession number: 8900236 Created on: Mon 29 Jul 2002 18:55:09 -0400 By: NODC archive manager Source: Copied from: /nodc/data/migration/accn/accn_9/8900236.dir This was a verified copy of an old magneto-optical jukebox platter. NODC created a new version of this accession (indicated as 1-version/, 2- version, etc. as necessary) to add a re-formatted version of the data initially available in the data/0-data/ directory (i.e., "original version" of these data). An NODC metadata improvement project identified IGOSS data accessions whose data in data/0-data/ failed to conform to the standard TESAC format. The problem was identified: extraneous characters and/or a block of 6 characters interpolated between character 80 and 81. Two programs were created to restructure the content of the data files (data values were not changed). The restructured data files were copied to data/1-data/ and use the existing data file number (minus the .) with .fixed and .field extensions. The data/1-data/*.fixed files are consistent with the TESAC format and have the extraneous characters and interpolated blocks removed. The data/1-data/*.field files were created as an interpretation of the .fixed files as a check that these data conform to the TESAC format. These data were rearranged into a temperature and salinity profile format. The cruise and station information are in a field-oriented format. Fields that have missing data are left blank or are indicated by a "NOT AVAILABLE" next to the field. The field format appears to make sense, with only one small exception. The format description says that the 'Air Temperature Indicator' should be blank for "no data", and 2 for "data present". But the data value in some files have that field as either blank, or "4". So the interpreted value is marked with "??" in the output listing. The values do indeed look like sensible air temperatures. No data values were change by either of these processing steps.
