KITES DATA 20 January 2003 ==================================================================================== KITES PROBLEM DATA DESCRIPTION Impact of the Keweenaw Current on cross margin transport in Lake Superior: Contribution to a study of physical processes. This is an archive of current meter data from in Lake Superior during the years 1998-2001. Among the 26 instruments deployed during the three years, we found three instruments with such severe problems in their data records that we have been unable to resolve them satisfactorily enough to include the data in the archive. We list the three instruments here, with a brief summary of the nature of their problems. If users of the archive desire to examine these records, we would be happy to make them available. In that event, please contact: Dr. Knut Aagaard aagaard@apl.washington.edu (206) 543-8942 Dr. Rebecca Woodgate woodgate@apl.washington.edu (206) 221-3268 Roger Andersen roger@apl.washington.edu (206) 543-1258 or Kay Runciman kay@apl.washington.edu (206) 543-1378 Polar Science Center, Applied Physics Lab, University of Washington 1013 NE 40th, Seattle, WA 98105-6698 USA FAX (206) 616-3142 --------------------------------------------------------------- Mooring H1 - 1998 RCM-7 S/N 2243 Instrument_Depth 20.8m At 47 deg 16.624 min N 88 deg 36.595 min W Water_Depth 51.8m The processed record from RCM-7 s/n 2243 shows a defective velocity measurement with a direction pegged near 300 degrees true and a current speed that is obviously low by about one-half. The most likely explanation is the vane being fouled by the rigging. This instrument did collect a temperature record that appears accurate. --------------------------------------------------------------- Mooring O1 - 1998 RCM-4 S/N 6926 Instrument_Depth 19.3m At 46 deg 57.286 min N 89 deg 19.815 min W Water_Depth 50.3m We were unable to read the tape for RCM-4 s/n 6926 to obtain a record consistent enough for processing. --------------------------------------------------------------- Mooring E4 - 2000 FSI 3D-ACM S/N 16138 Instrument_Depth 238.0m At 47 deg 31.321 min N 88 deg 09.679 min W Water_Depth 246.0m We have compared the FSI velocity record at 238m with those measured by the Aanderaa RCM 9 (SN 523) at 240m on the same mooring, and by a downward-looking RDI ADCP (deployed by E. Ralph) located 88 m above the FSI and with a bin centered on 240m. The comparison showed large discrepancies between the FSI record and those from the two other instruments. In contrast, the RCM 9 and the ADCP records agreed quite well. We have been unable to reconcile these disparate records, nor have we been able to determine the cause of the apparent FSI measurement error. ------------------------------------------------------------------- End-of-text-file
