QUALITY ASSESSMENT OF SEA LEVEL DATA by the UH SEA LEVEL CENTER/NATIONAL OCEANOGRAPHIC DATA CENTER JOINT ARCHIVE FOR SEA LEVEL updated: 18 May 2000 Station : Victoria,BC Latitude: 48 25.0N Country : Canada Longitude: 123 22.0W JASL # : 543A Time Meridian: 120W (GMT - 8 hr) GLOSS # : none NODC #: 74128301 Contributor : Marine Environmental Data Service Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans S12082-200 Kent St. Ottawa, Ontario CANADA K1A-OE6 *Data obtained at JASL from D.Luther historic archive from Scripps Originator : Canadian Hydrographic Service, Institute of Ocean Sciences, P.O. Box 6000 Sidney, British Columbia CANADA V8L 4B2 Original Data: analog Instrmnt Type: standard float/well gauge Digitzd Intvl: hourly Present Data : Hourly, daily, and monthly values obtained by: Hourly : spot hourly Daily : 119-point convolution filter (Bloomfield, 1976) centered on noon applied to the hourly data with respective periods of the 95, 50, and 5% amplitude points at 124.0, 60.2, and 40.2 hours Monthly: Simple average of all daily values; calculated if 7 or fewer days are missing Span of data : 18 Feb 1909 - 31 Dec 1964 Gaps > 1 mon : 01 Aug 1933 - 01 Jun 1934 Time Refernce: GMT (hours 00-23) Space-filler Flag :-9999 Units : millimeters Missing Data Flag : 9999 Existing : Yes Operational : Yes Sat. Trans. : No Distribution : 1909-1964 Refernce Levl: All heights have been referred to the station tide staff zero which is linked to fixed benchmarks. A level adjustment was based on comparisons of monthly means to the holdings of the Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level (PSMSL) and the hourly resdiuals: added to YYYY MM DD HH YYYY MM DD HH original (mm) 1929/10/01/18Z-1930/01/01/05Z 75 The mean level agrees well with the PSMSL series. Comment : The hourly residuals show mild fluctuations within the tidal frequency band prior. It is estimated that the timing is off occassionally by about one- to fifteen-minutes. Only extreme fluctuations are noted below.
