Source:  Temperature, salinity, oxygen, phosphate, total phosphate, nitrite, nitrate and other data on 3x5 cards,
digitized at NODC on 04/26/01 received by mail by Godfrey Trammell from Dr. John W. Farrington, 
WHOI Education Director, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute (WHOI) 

The data is stored at Image Entry, London Kentucky. 

The Woods Hole MBT Collection consisted of 676,368 cards containing the MBT trace images
and corresponding meteorological observations collected at the time each MBT was lowered.
The data were collected during the period 1940 through 1970. A large percentage of the
temperature profile data derived from these MBTs has already been archived at NODC;
however, the accompanying meteorological observations have never been added to NODC's data
base. The missing meteorological data are very important for climate studies; so we contracted
with Image Entry to scan the cards and digitize the data on the face of the card.

The Woods Hole MBT cards were also geographically sorted by Marsden Square. In order for
us to check these data against the NODC data base after digitizing has been completed, the cards
had to be sorted by ship name, year, month, and day. Summer interns sorted the cards before
they were shipped to Image Entry.

The Woods Hole MBT Collection included five different formats. Daphne Johnson devised
ASCII formats and provided them the Image Entry to overcome this problem. New software had
to be acquired by Image Entry to overcome the poor condition of the cards so they could be
scanned properly. The entire WHOI collection, scanned images and digitized data, are now
contained on 85 CD-ROMs.




Format: These data were manually entered into a MS Excel spreadsheet by NODCpersonnel and/or contractors 
from the original source on 04/26/2001.  The MS Excel spreadsheet was subsequently saved as a comma-delimited ascii text in .csv format.
