The bulk of this CD-ROM, entitled "Three Decades of In Situ
Sea Surface Salinity Measurements in the Tropical Pacific Ocean" (130°E-70°W;
30°N-30°S) by T. Delcroix, C. Hénin, F. Masia and D. Varillon, is based on Sea Surface
Salinity (SSS) measurements obtained through two Institut de Recherche pour le
Développement (IRD, formerly ORSTOM) ship-of-opportunity (SOP) programs:
- The first SOP program
operated from Nouméa (New Caledonia) and Papeete (French Polynesia) during 1969-98 and
1976-92, respectively. SSS measurements were obtained from water samples bottled by ship
officers every 30-60 nautical miles.
- The second, on-going, SOP
program has been operating from Nouméa since the early 1990s. SSS measurements were
obtained from thermosalinographs installed in the engine room. High frequency sampling (15
s) and additional validation procedures resulted in a more precise monitoring.
Additional thermosalinograph measurements were included in the CD-ROM. They were obtained
from French IRD and IFREMER research vessels in the tropical Pacific, as well as from PMEL
(USA) and JAMSTEC (Japan), both of which provided quality controlled thermosalinograph
data from cruises servicing the TAO and TRITON moorings within 8°N-8°S.
Reports and publications using data from this CD-ROM should acknowledge
the origin of the data, and copies should be provided to the authors. The data, Fortran
programs and documentation are provided without any warranty.
