DATA REPORT OF OCEANOGRAPHIC OBSERVATIONS No.89 The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has been carrying out oceanographic and marine meteorological observations on board research vessels, at the coastal water temperature observation stations and by ocean data buoys, for the purposes of prevention and mitigation of natural disasters, monitoring the oceanic condition and its variation, and contributing to international cooperation activities. This Data Report contains the data obtained from the observations made by JMA in 1998 together with the explanations. The observations include the followings: 1. Oceanographic Observations on board Research Vessels Oceanographic observations are conducted in the seas adjacent to Japan and in the western North Pacific on board six vessels: the Ryofu Maru, the Keifu Maru (both operated by Climate and Marine Department at the Headquarters), the Kofu Maru (operated by Hakodate Marine Observatory), the Shumpu Maru (Kobe Marine Observatory), the Chofu Maru (Nagasaki Marine Observatory) and the Seifu Maru (Maizuru Marine Observatory). 2. Coastal Water Temperature Observations JMA has carried out water temperature observations at the coastal stations. Historical time series of 10 day and monthly mean temperatures, daily observations and hourly observations are available in this CD-ROM. 3. Ocean Data Buoy Observations Operational ocean data buoy observations have been made to obtain marine meteorological and oceanographic observations in the seas around Japan. The CD-ROM is formatted in the ISO-9660 standard. The directory structure of the CD-ROM is presented below. "README.1ST" and text files in "README" subdirectory give the outline of the CD-ROM records, information of file structure, code tables and so on in English. HTML files are also provided to see the information, data and graphic images on this CD-ROM. To see these information, please open the file "INDEX.HTM" on the browser software and click the title which you want to see. "README\VIEW" subdirectory contains software developed by the JMA to display data of the file "-.E". The file named "EVIEW.C" is an example source written with ANSI-C. The file named "EVIEW.EXE" is its executable file on MS-DOS PC. This software reads the hydrographic data (-.E) and prints to screen sequentially the selected data file. "README\ERRATA" subdirectory contains the ASCII text file "ERRATA.98" and errata files for previously issued volumes. -+--+---EVIEW.C, EVIEW.EXE | |---ERRATA.98 | |- EXPLA.TXT, BUOYREAD.ME | +----+--<1998>--+----KE9801.E, KE9801.T | | | KE9801.A | | | | | +----KE9804.E, KE9804.T, | | | KE9804.A | | . | | . | | +----SM9811.E, SM9811.T, | | SM9811.A, SM9811.ZP, | | SM9811.PP | | | +---+-------PHKO9801.GIF, KMKO9801.GIF, | | ............, | | PMSM9811.GIF, GLSM9811.GIF | | | +--------PHKO9801.EPS, KMKO9801.EPS, | ............, | PMSM9811.EPS, GLSM9811.EPS | +------COAST98J, COAST98D, COAST98H,428,... | +-------<1998>----B21002.98, B21004.98, B22001.98 | +----+----KO9801.HTM, KO9801.GIF,..... | +--SHIP.HTM, COAST,HTM, BUOY.HTM,..... | +--README.1ST, INDEX.HTM, COPRIGHT.TXT Graphic Image Files of Vertical Sections of Temperature and Salinity The six vessels of the JMA have been periodically performing oceanographic observations along the fixed lines. The lines are shown in the "Data Catalog". The vertical sections of temperature and salinity along each line in 1998 are prepared as GIF files and PostScript files, which are stored on the CD-ROM. In a file named as "llxxyymm.GIF" or "llxxyymm.EPS", the codes ll, xx, and yymm indicate the line [listed in the table below], ship code and cruise number, respectively. For example, the vertical sections along 144 E in May 1998 is illustrated in the front page of the "Data Catalog".
