GHRSST Reanalysis/GCOS SST-SI Intercomparison Data Set Information

Weekly One Degree Products

AVHRR Pathfinder Version 5

This data set was created from the original Pathfinder Version 5 data set, a daily global satellite SST product with 4 km spatial resolution. SST values are available for daytime, nighttime, and a day/night average. The Pathfinder product assigns each pixel a quality flag with a value from 0 to 7, with 7 being the highest quality observation. The GCOS data set entitled "AVHRR Pathfinder V5 Q=4-7" uses only those Pathfinder pixels with quality flags of 4-7; the GCOS data set entitled "AVHRR Pathfinder V5 Q==7" uses only those Pathfinder pixels with quality flags of 7. GCOS Pathfinder data begins on week one (4 January) of 1985 and continues through week 52 (29 December) of 2007.

Operational AVHRR

This data set was created from weeky observations of the AVHRR instrument on board the operational NOAA and U.S. Navy satellites. SST values are available for daytime, nighttime, and a day/night average. The data begins on week 45 (5 November) of 1981 and continues through week 28 (14 July) of 2007.

HadSST2

This data set was created from the UK Met Office Hadley Centre's in situ SST data set. A monthly 5-degree verseion of the Hadley Centre data set is available from January of 1850 to the present. Weekly one degree GCOS HadSST2 data begins on week 44 (29 October) of 1981 and continues through week 52 of 2004 (actually 1 January 2005), and are available for daytime, nighttime, and a day/night average. Hadley Centre SST values are originally taken from the International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS) from 1850 to 1997 and from the NCEP-GTS from 1998 to the present.

OISST Version 2

This data set was created from the Optimum Interpolation SST Analysis by Dick Reynolds of the NOAA National Climatic Data Center. This is a weekly one degree analysis product that combines in situ and satellite SSTs. Data begins on week 44 (29 October) of 1981 and continues through week 38 (1 December) of 2007. SST values available are a day/night average.

Daily OI 1/4 degree

This data set was created from the Optimum Interpolation 1/4 degree Daily SST Analysis by Dick Reynolds of the NOAA National Climatic Data Center. This is a 1/4 degree daily analysis product that combines in situ and satellite SSTs. Data begins on week one (4 January) of 1985 and continues through week 43 (27 October) of 2007. SST values available are a day/night average.

Monthly Five Degree Products

AVHRR Pathfinder Version 5

This data set was created from the UK Met Office Hadley Centre's in situ SST data set. A monthly 5-degree version of the Hadley Centre data set is available from January of 1850 to the present. Monthly five degree GCOS HadSST2 data for the satellite era begins on 1 January of 1981 and continues through 31 May of 2006. Monthly five degree GCOS HadSST2 data for the historical era begins on 1 January of 1850 and continues through 30 June of 2008. SST values available are a day/night average. Hadley Centre SST values were originally taken from the International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS) from 1850 to 1997 and from the NCEP-GTS from 1998 to the present.

Extended Reconstruction SST Version 3

This data set was created from the Extended Reconstruction SST product of the NOAA National Climatic Data Center, which is a monthly two degree analysis product that uses the ICOADS SST data set, bias-adjusted satellite data beginning in 1985, and statistical methods to generate global SST fields. The ERSSTv3 data set is available from January of 1854 to the present. Monthly five degree GCOS ERSSTv3 data for the satellite era begins on 1 January of 1981 and continues through 30 November of 2007. Monthly five degree GCOS ERSSTv3 data for the historical era begins on 1 January of 1854 and continues through 30 June of 2008. SST values available are a day/night average. NOTE: The most recent version of the ERSST available from the National Climatic Data Center is v3b, which uses exactly the same methodology as ERSSTv3 with one exception: satellite SST data are not used in ERSSTv3b. HadISST

This data set was created from the UK Met Office Hadley Centre's Global Sea-Ice and SST data set, Version 1. SST data are originally taken from the Met Office Marine Data Bank (MDB) and ICOADS. A monthly one degree version of the HadISST is available from 1870 through two months before the current month. Monthly five degree GCOS HadISST data for the satellite era begins on 1 January of 1981 and continues through 31 October of 2007. Monthly five degree GCOS HadISST data for the historical era begins on 1 January of 1870 and continues through 30 June of 2008. SST values available are a day/night average.

Kaplan

This data set was created from the Kaplan Extended SST data set, which uses a combination of optimally-interpolated ship observations and remote sensing data to generate a monthly five degree global SST product. The Kaplan Extended SST data set is available from January of 1856 through October of 2007. Monthly five degree GCOS Kaplan data for the satellite era begins on 1 January of 1981 and continues through 31 October of 2007. Monthly five degree GCOS Kaplan data for the historical era begins on 1 January of 1856 and continues through 30 June of 2008. SST values available are a day/night average.

ICOADS

This data set was created from the International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS) Release 2.4, which is a collection of observations taken from surface marine reports from ships, buoys, and other platform types. Monthly summary statistics are available on a two degree grid from 1 January of 1800 to 31 May of 2007 and on a one degree grid from 1 January of 1960 to 31 May of 2007. Monthly five degree GCOS ICOADS data for the historical era begins on 1 January of 1850 and continues through 31 May of 2007. SST values available are a day/night average.

COBE

This data set was created from the Centennial in situ Observation-Based Estimates (COBE) Analysis SST data set, which is a monthly one degree analysis product that combines SST observations from ICOADS, the Kobe Collection, and a buoy data set compiled by the Marine Environmental Data Service (MEDS). A monthly one degree version of the COBE data set is available from 1891 through August of 2008. Monthly five degree GCOS COBE data for the historical era begins on 1 January of 1891 and continues through 30 June of 2008. SST values available are a day/night average.
