Background
NOAA's CoastWatch
Program was implemented in 1988, after a "red tide" event occurred
off the North Carolina coast in the fall of 1987. The primary objective of
CoastWatch is to provide near-real-time remotely sensed environmental data
collected from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) available
to federal and state decision makers, local marine scientists and coastal
resource managers in a timely and accessible manner. Retrospective CoastWatch data products
are provided online through NOAA's National Climatic Data Center (NCDC).
