NOAA-17 Data Corrected!
</title>
<link>
http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/SatelliteData/pathfinder4km/status.html#item0092
</link>
<description>
The issue with the NOAA-17 data (spanning 2002-2005), in which the
data-day split was incorrectly split at 0 degrees West instead of 180 degrees
W has been corrected and all the new files have been archived and made
accessible. Anyone downloading data from the years
2002-2005 on after Thu Oct 20 15:00:00 UTC 2011 will be getting the correct
files. If you are unsure which version you have, look at any file you have
with "NOAA17" in the file name (part of 2002, all of 2003-2004, and part of 2005). If it has "fv01.0" then you have the incorrect file. If it has "fv02.0"
in it then you have the correct file.

Pathfinder Version 5.2 Known Issues Posted
</title>
<link>
http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/SatelliteData/pathfinder4km/status.html#item0091
</link>
<description>
A table listing known issues with Pathfinder Version 5.2 (PFV52) has been posted at the
NODC Pathfinder web site (http://pathfinder.nodc.noaa.gov). Of particular note is an
issue with the NOAA-17 data (spanning 2002-2005), in which the data-day split was
incorrectly split at 0 degrees West instead of 180 degrees W. This issue has been
corrected and a new version of the data for those years is being reprocessed. We hope
to have the new version of the data available by 11 October 2011.

<title>New Pathfinder climatologies available for 1982-2008</title>
<link>
http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/SatelliteData/pathfinder4km/status.html#item0089
</link>
<description>
A new collection of global, 4km daily sea surface temperature climatologies is available for download at http://data.nodc.noaa.gov/thredds/catalog/pathfinder/Version5.0_Climatologies/1982_2008/. These climatologies were derived from harmonic analysis of the AVHRR Pathfinder Version 5.0 and 5.1 sea surface temperature time series data for 1982-2008. Daily, 5-day and monthly climatologies are available. The climatology files are in netCDF-4 and fully comply with the GHRSST Data Specification 2.0 for Level 4 products. In addition to climatological sea surface temperature, each file contains standard deviation, sea ice concentration, sea ice concentration error, and land mask information. Please note that in order to accommodate the new climatologies, the directories under /pathfinder/Version5.0_Climatologies have been reorganized. Older climatology files are still available and can now be found at http://data.nodc.noaa.gov/thredds/catalog/pathfinder/Version5.0_Climatologies/1985_2001/.

Minor delay in production of Pathfinder Version 5.2
</title>
<link>
http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/SatelliteData/pathfinder4km/status.html#item0087
</link>
<description>
The NOAA National Oceanographic Data Center (NODC) apologizes for the delay in the release of the AVHRR Pathfinder Version 5.2 (PFV52) sea surface temperature data set. NODC's intent was to release PFV52 early this week; however, quality assurance procedures uncovered a bug in the software late last week that necessitates reprocessing of the entire data set. PFV52 will be available by August 31st, 2011 at the latest. To receive notification of its release and to keep abreast of all Pathfinder news, subscribe to the Pathfinder RSS feed.

</link>
<description>
The GHRSST Long Term Stewardship and Reanalysis Facility at the NOAA National Oceanographic Data Center thanks everyone who participated in the public review and comment period for AVHRR Pathfinder Version 5.2 (PFV52). Numerous minor comments and questions were received but no major issues identified with the draft data set. The Pathfinder team at NODC and the University of Miami is making final adjustments based on these comments and plans to release the full PFV52 data set prior to the 12th GHRSST Science Team meeting, which is being held 27 June to 1 July 2011 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Thank you for helping us create the best possible AVHRR-based climate data record for SST!

AVHRR Pathfinder Version 5.2 Data Released for Public Review
</title>
<link>
http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/SatelliteData/pathfinder4km/status.html#item0085
</link>
<description>
The GHRSST Long Term Stewardship and Reanalysis Facility at the NOAA National Oceanographic Data Center announces a public review period for the AVHRR Pathfinder Version 5.2 (PFV52) sea surface temperature product. PFV52 was computed using an entirely modernized system, based on SeaDAS and incorporating several key changes as we prepare for the future Version 6 (PFV6) data set (no release has yet been established for PFV6). These changes include the use of an entirely new land mask, a modified grid, and the inclusion of sea ice and wind speed auxiliary data to support the use of the SST data. Importantly, the new PFV52 data are provided in netCDF-4 (classic model, with internal compression and chunking) and are nearly 100% compliant with the GHRSST Data Specification Version 2.0 (http://data.nodc.noaa.gov/pathfinder/PFV52_PublicReview/GDS_TechSpecs_v2.0.pdf) for L3C products. These data deviate from that standard only in that the sses_bias, sses_standard_deviation, and sst_dtime variables are empty and the aerosol_dynamic_indicator variable is not yet present. We have made a collection of data spanning 2005-2010 (some days are presently missing) available for download via the following services: HTTP: http://data.nodc.noaa.gov/pathfinder/PFV52_PublicReview; FTP: ftp://ftp.nodc.noaa.gov/pub/data.nodc/pathfinder/PFV52_PublicReview; and THREDDS: http://data.nodc.noaa.gov/thredds/catalog/pathfinder/PFV52_PublicReview. We ask you to review and examine these data, then send questions, comments, or concerns to Kenneth.Casey@noaa.gov by 11:59 PM EST on Monday, 23 May 2011. We will address as many problems identified through this public review as we can, prior to production of the full PFV52 data set. We expect to release the full PFV52 data set prior to the 12th GHRSST Science Team meeting, which is being held 27 June to 1 July 2011 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Thank you for helping us create the best possible AVHRR-based climate data record for SST!

Error in Pathfinder Version 5.1 reference fields
</title>
<link>
http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/SatelliteData/pathfinder4km/status.html#item0082
</link>
<description>
An error was discovered in the processing of the reference SST fields (-bsst files) for all Version 5.1 Pathfinder data, which reated a "halo" of cold pixels around coastlines in the reference field. As a result, several anomalously cool Pathfinder SST pixels have passed the reference test during processing and been assigned quality flag values that are too high. Using pixels with a quality flag of 7 does decrease this effect, however there is no perfect solution. This issue affects all Version 5.1 data, and will be corrected for Version 6 of Pathfinder. For an image demonstrating this issue, please see the "Known Problems" section of the Pathfinder User Guide.

AVHRR Pathfinder data for 1981-1985 available for the first time ever!
</title>
<link>
http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/SatelliteData/pathfinder4km/status.html#item0078
</link>
<description>
For the first time in the nearly 20-year history of the AVHRR Pathfinder program, data for September of 1981 through January of 1985 from the NOAA-7 Polar Operational Environmental Satellite are now available. These data were produced using Version 5.1 of the Pathfinder algorithm, which uses a higher resolution reference data set than Version 5.0. This reference set, the Reynolds Optimum Interpolation 1/4-degree Daily SST Analysis Version 2, is used as the first guess SST and in the quality control procedures. The primary effect of this change is to retain more data in the coastal and high gradient regions and in regions where meandering or feature advection is present. All of the Pathfinder data are available via ftp, http, and the NODC Ocean Archive System.

Reorganization of HTTP and FTP data directories for Pathfinder Version 5
</title>
<link>
http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/SatelliteData/pathfinder4km/status.html#item0077
</link>
<description>
Formal Pathfinder Version 5 data for 1985 through 2006 have now been consolidated under a single directory on the HTTP and FTP servers. This directory is, for HTTP: http://data.nodc.noaa.gov/pathfinder/Version5.0/ and for FTP: ftp://data.nodc.noaa.gov/pub/data.nodc/pathfinder/Version5.0/. Interim Pathfinder Version 5 data for 2002 through 2007 have also been consolidated under a single directory. This directory is, for HTTP: http://data.nodc.noaa.gov/pathfinder/Version5.0_interim/ and for FTP: ftp://data.nodc.noaa.gov/pub/data.nodc/pathfinder/Version5.0_interim/. The following redundant directories and all subdirectories will be deleted from the HTTP and FTP servers on April 13, 2009: ../Version5.0_NOAA16/, ../Version5.0_NOAA17/, ../Version5.0_NOAA18/, ../Version5.0_interim_NOAA16/, and ../Version5.0_interim_NOAA17/. Please note this is simply a change in the location of Pathfinder Version 5 data files; the content of all files will remain unchanged.

		Problem with Pathfinder V5 data from NOAA-18 (06 Feb 2009)
</title>
<link>
http://www.nodc.noaa.gov/SatelliteData/pathfinder4km/status.html#item0076
</link>
<description>
		Due to an error with the AVHRR instrument on board
		NOAA-18, data for some daytime pixels may be missing.
		There was a problem with the daytime quality flags for NOAA-18 which
		resulted in removing some valid data within the sunglint region.
		This is a minor error and does not affect the quality of the data
		that are present. All data from NOAA-18 are being reprocessed to
		correct this error and will be made available as soon as possible. Affected data include final data from day 156 of 2005 through 2006, and interim data for 2007.

		Inconsistency in the way variables in HDF files are named has been
		identified (07 March 2006)

<description>
		Thanks to Grayson Wood of NOAA's
		National Marine Fisheries Service for identifying an inconsistency
		in the
		way we've named the variables inside the V5 Pathfinder data. The
		names all
		make sense except for the standard deviation files (with sdev in
		the
		filename), which were inadvertantly named "sst" instead of "sdev".

<description>
A complete set of browse images for the data available to
date have been created and placed on line. These
images are very small and very coarse looks at the available
data files (only one of every thirty-two pixels in latitude and
longitude is displayed). They are part of the quality
assurance system, enabling rapid visual inspection for any gross
file errors and testing file access and format integrity.

<description>
A problem has been discovered with the
7-day average files (found under "7day"). A processing error resulted in
